Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't VTEC engagement contingent on not only RPMS but also vehicle speed? Otherwise, you could hit VTEC just by revving the engine from a standstill. I think the car has to be moving at least 30-35 mph before VTEC will engage which might explain why you don't hear it in 1st gear.

Perhaps you don't quite understand the concept of VTEC. VTEC isn't a miracle powerbooster that shoots your car forward when it engages. It's just a design that Honda came up with to maximize the powerband of the engine most efficiently. In 1st gear, there really wouldn't be a need to hit VTEC unless you're almost at redline I suppose and you're way past 30-35 mph.

Did you check your oil level? vtecs like to burn oil and sometimes if its too low it wont engage. As for why only in first gear, I'm not sure. But check your oil regardless.

it's true VTEC won't enguage until you're moving. Sit still and revv it... you'll bounce at around 6200 rpm's, which is the rev limit when VTEC won't enguage. But as to be going 35... nah. Mine will hit it in first every time. Definantly check your oil level. Maybe your oil is just at the mark that when you get going in first the level seems too low, but after that since the sudden accel isn't there it's ok.
