Tar Material in Rear Hatch?
So there is all this Tar stuff in the rear hatch, under the carpet. I know this can be removed.
How much work is it, and if so, how much weight savings can be made here?

There's two schools of thought dealing with this:
1) Freeze it and crack it off.
2) Heat it up and scrape it off.
I need to do this in my Integra but I just haven't got around to it. Thank god ITRs come without it

Turbo mag got ALL of it outta a g2, front and rear, and it saved 26lbs. I`m sure it took quite a few hours too!
I did my G2, man did it suck up front. I did the heat it up thing in the front it sucks. In the back we went with the cold thing it works good.
It's below the carpeting in the car and trunk... it's sound deadening material, it also absorbs some of the heat of the underside of the car, including the exhaust heat....
So for those of you that did it.... props.... that's a PITA to do..... but when you
go to the store for ice cream.... don't keep it in the trunk
I'm interested to know ek, after you removed it... did you notice an increase in cabin noise on the road ?

Drive up a mountain that has an ice cap, then when you come down..... j/k
But I've installed sound deadening material many time b4 and, when you lay it down, you use a heat gun to soften it so it is almost gum like so it is extremely pliable and conforms to the surface.... Without actually trying to remove it myself.... IMHO, I would say heating it would be the way to go...

Don't worry about freezing it. As long as you don't do it on a REALLY hot day, this method works really well.
We used a small pry bar/crow bar as shown in the pic. Hit it with a hammer and chissel your way along the underside of the tar material. It will come up in large chunks.
Then use WD-40 and spray the area once the tar has been removed. Let it soak for about 5mins and then clean up the little bits that are still stuck to the floor. It makes a big mess at this point so be careful.
Then use some Wax/Grease remover to wipe up the area and your done. Total time: ~4-5hrs.

Oh.. in case your wondering what it looks like right after you chissel up all the tar, this is whats let if you don't want to clean it:
Thanks!
ugh, i just did this today, it took me about 3 hours to take off the three in the rear hatch and the two under the backseats. how many are left up in the front?
Damn, you guys are pulling it off and I am planning to bury my cabin in dynamat in a few days.... heh heh heh..... the irony of it all....
but it`s well worth it
Am I understanding this right, or is there something I'm missing?
well, no one is in the rear hatch and there usually aren't many people that want to be cramped in the back of an integra right? so why not pull out the tar? ~25lbs might seem insignificant but every little bit helps.
