thanks.
thanks.
It's just a cover, so you can pretty much do whatever the hell you want to the outside of it. If you sand it, don't screw up the spark plug tube edges or the contact edges of the cover or you may get oil leaks.
To take it off, remove anything attached to it (PCV valve, grounding wires, etc.). Remove the spark plug boots. There are 4 bolts holding it to the head, remove those and pull the cover off.
You may have to replace the valve cover gasket and the spark plug tube seals, if it hasn't been done in a while it's easy and cheap. Also, make sure you torque the valve cover back down properly, otherwise you may get oil leaks around the edges or destroy the new gasket you put in.
While you have the cover off, drape a cloth or newspaper or something over the valvetrain to prevent debris from getting in there. I hope you're not thinking of playing with it still attached, if you do you'd better mask off the rest of the engine bay and the tube seals, etc.

if you plan to respray it, you might want to take out the whole thing.
make sure you have a torque wrench to torque the valvecover back.
take out all the gasket and stuff.
stripe the paint, sand, primer and paint
