Default idle RPMs when setting distributor timing?

my idle is kind of high...i'm guessing around 800 or 900 rpms. when i set my timing, will this matter? i need it to be set exact and would like to know. hondata says it should be around 600 rpms to be safe. they say if the idle is too high, the timing could be off by as much as 10 degrees is this true? is there such thing as setting the timing when the car is idling too low? if not, maybe i could set the idle to as low as it goes and do the timing from there.

Have you tried unpluging the TPS sensor with the car at idle this can help drop the RPM. I havnt had to much trouble adjusting around 700 to 800 though.
