Default How does a BOV work???

Hey guys...me and my dad are having a discussion about how a BOV works. We agree that it should open when the throttle plate closes..to avoid damaging the compressor, but are unsure what controls it?? I say that the nipple on the top of it should be run to a vaccum source on the intake manifold (brake booster or such) and he thinks it should just open because of reaching the specified pressure. Can somebody post pictures of it installed and what they did with the nipple!! Thanks a ton guys
P.S. I did search..and couldnt find anything!!

its hooked up to a vaccuum source behind the throttle body. boost pressure helps to hold the valve closed when you're on the gas and boostin. when you get off the gas and switch to vaccuum, there is no more boost pressure on the other side of the valve to hold it closed anymore so it gets blown open by the boost in the charge line and sucked open by the intake manifold vaccuum. they also stay open under engine braking and idle.

you need the vaccuum line hooked up!

it should be getting blown out of the charge pipe. but i feel the same way...

this is the reason a lot of bovs have filters on them like the blitz. i haven't heard any horror stories about bad things getting sucked up, but i know that a lot of people swear by the bov filters

Is there any way to make one for the TIAL?? Where would be best to place it to keep junk out of it??? I was going to put it after the compressor, but before the IC...but now Im thinking under my hood near my TB. *I already read the Best BOV placement thread* to keep junk out of it. Thanks a lot for your help man..I was expecting to get flamed big time on this one!!!

i guess all the mad flamers haven't seen this thread yet... anyway, i guess sucking up junk in the bov is not much of a problem... and i cant see how you would make a filter for the tial other than putting a stocking or something over the whole thing.
