Default Rev limiter ?

Today when I was reving my car up at idle, the rev limiter kicked in at around 7,500. My car red lines at 8 normally or 8,200 but I was just wondering why it cuts out at 7,500 when at idle ? By the way the computer is not from an automatice because it reaches 8,200 when driving.

I believe the car has a "sitting" rev limiter - meaning you shouldn't rev the pee out of it while it's idling.

My Alero does that. Redline is 7600, but it cuts in at 3500 or so in nuetral... But the car is an automatic. Your car shouldn't be cutting out like that if you have a 5spd and a 5spd ECU. For all the computer knows the engine is at a certain RPM; it doesn't know wether its in gear or not. i.e., it can't tell the difference between 3500 in nuetral and 3500 in gear.

Nope, not low on oil. My oil pressure has seemed a tad lower at idle when the car is fully warmed up. I'm pretty sure though its because its getting colder out, or its been a while since I have done an oil change. Actually, that sounds bad. It has been like 2,000 miles since the last oil change. There was a time when the car was sitting for a couple of days. Anyways back to the topic, if I was low on oil, wouldn't it cut out sooner when I was driving to ? So really know one knows for sure yet ?

I have not tried again, but I'm guessing it would. At first I thought it was because the car was not fully warmed up, but it was. It had like 2 degrees before it was full warmed up. And after today when I did this, I took the car for a test drive to make sure it was not doing this when I drove. And sure enough it didn't.

maybe your tach is lagging behind the engine. did you hold it at the redline for a while or just bounce off once.

It will rev alot quicker when it is not in gear, and honda tachs are know to be horrible. Have you redlined it in neutral be for??

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe VTEC doesn't kick in if you rev the car while in neutral.

I'm not really sure about this either, I usually don't rev my car up in neutral. So I don't remember.

Ok, the statement that Mr.S made did seem to make sense the most. Thanks, I was just wondering.

To VTEC to engage you must be going a Certain MPH thats why it's not engaging at a standstill and you have the aprox 7500 rev limit.
