How to take off the shift rod.
Ok I'm having some problems trying to get this thing off. I got everything off except for the part where it connects to the transaxle. I took off the little clip and now i'm stuck. The manual i'm using says to push out a spring pin with a pin push. Only thing is i don't see any spring pin. All i see is a hole at the end of the rod that wsa covered before by a clip. Can anyone help me out?
that spring pin should be in there. get down there again and loot at it carefully. to get it out, get a punch or an old small socket thats the same diameter as the spring pin and hammer away. hth
anyone have a close up of what the spring pin looks like? i see this black piece inside the hole and i've tried hammering it out but it doesn't go anywhere
oh you poor poor poor man... that took me over one hour to pound out.
yes its in there, it is a black hardened steel tube, like a piece of sheet steel that has been rolled into a tube shape... with interlocking serrated ends... these provide a grip on the ID of the shifter hole it goes thru.
what a completely unecessarily hard part to remove.
get the car jacked up as high as possible and go at it with a punch the right size, otherwise you will spreadi it out / flare it and that makes it even harder.. dont ask me how I know that
hth, and good luck...

The only way to get it out is with a punch. I messed up 2 screw drivers and smashed the $hit out of my hand with a hammer. I got a punch set from Sears ($31 bucks later) had a punch set, and MORE TOOLS! 20 seconds later I had the pin out. I believe its 5/32 or 7/16.. One of the two. Use a punch!
i used an 8mm cap screw ($0.79)
picked the length that i wanted and it came out in a few seconds
a little penetrating lube doesn't hurt either

The others are correct - use some WD-40 or some other penetrating oil and let it soak in.
Lots of pounding with a BFH (big fvking hammer) and a good punch, and that pin will pop right out !
