Default Phantom Grip vs Quaife

Well i recently purchased the sms header and i am (pending on dyno results) going to start on my drivetrain/suspension setup. i searched for lsd and got few answers to my question. i'm looking for people with first hand experience with the phantom grip lsd. The quaife is not going to be an option till i build the savings acct back up. Even then i still want a new clutch, springs/shocks.

However i can afford the phantom grip right now (Its roughly $300, correct?). I basically want people with somewhat long term experience with said lsd. Reliability is paramount, as this is my daily driver. I may be autocrossing the car in the future but not until i have another car to drive. as of right now just improving my straightline speed would be fine. Basically will i noticably improve my 60 ft times ? Thanks in advance for your replys.

its not a real LSD, it basically locks the differential to keep the wheels spinning together

they are trash, ive heard plenty of horror stories and know a couple guys who blew them up, save for a quaife

i know its not a true lsd, but from what i learned searching it "can" work well in straightline applications or road race/autocross on a budget. I searched for phantom grip and yielded better results. From what i read they don't work well above 300 whp and generally kill the tranny due to hondas weak spider gears.

Basically the opinions are split between those who know people that have used them and those that have had them. The majority of responses i read are against the "random grip", but those that have had them generally say they perform as claimed. Chances are i will wait and see what the tax return yields and go from there. if the car wasn't my daily driver i would try the phantom grip, but to be on the safe side i will wait to see what i can afford. Most likely try and do drivetrain, then suspension or vice versa, rather than all at once.

thanks for the opinions, keep them coming.

my buddie put a phantom grip (style) in his old DSM and it work ok in a straight line but it SUCKED in the corners... What happens is that the outside wheel can not overrun!! So the car just PUSHES thru the corner, it can also "chatter" thru the corner acting like a LOCKER.
NOT reccomended in a FWD "sports car"

SAVE SAVE SAVE SAVE for that quaife!

everyone overlooks the stock unit...m2b4 jdm lsd, you can sell your stock tranny to save on some of the cost.

30k mi. and 300 whp later its still holding strong...ill let you know how it does on slicks soon enough

I'd just save for the Quaife you won't regret it or have anything to worry about with it.

you not fixing anything gettin a phantom break or a factor jdm lsd. the weak point is the carrier, it flex's and then the spider gears break. quaife owns all and it has a lifetime warranty

Don't forget to include installation for the PG, making it's lower price less so.

Okay, look at it this way. With the PG, you have some people who love it and some who hate it.

With the Quaife, everyone loves them. There you go.

Over look the Phantom grip it is a differential locker not LSD it will cause more harm then good. Just save you money and get a true LSD unit. Even under acceleration a phantom grip diff locker may not lock so that both tires spin, basically a complete waste.

, i don't trust my car to anyone but me. if you ever work in a shop you would think twice about letting someone else work on your car. You would be surprised how shady mechanics can be.

that is so true. it seems to me that the phantom seems to be more like a locker which would provide good traction in the hole shot but a lot of understeer in the corners.

I have both straight line drag raced, and autocrossed on the phantom grip insert. On street tires I was less than 2 seconds behind the leaders in my class(SM) and they were ALL on race tires. Under hard working conditions, it has worked great for me. The leaders that day were a 400+whp supra and a gsr swapped eg civic coupe, and I was running the wiseco setup with kyb agx, sportlines, front upper bar, no lower sway, no rear interior, battery relocate, jun flywheel, act xtss, and energy susp bushings. Enough said from me. I am going to be putting in the heavier spring set for drag racing, as it sometimes does not work as described. The heavier set should be awesome, and I will get a writeup on that also. BTW, I have been inside the tranny many times and the spider gears and carrier look great. I have had the PG out a few times. It is a very eay install. that's all for now.

phantom grip is horrible, I used to have a post from another forum saved about a guy who had one, the reason I saved it was becasue it was soo funny, the poor guy had to drop his trans like 4 times after it broke 3 times, and then he went on and on about how crappy they are...... anyway, if you are not making much pwr and on a budget, don't bother with either,..... but if you have the money.... get a quaife..... you can't beat them, and if you do, they fix it....... free, nuff said
