Default Coolant Disappearing

I'm driving back from the gas station and I glance at the temperature gauge and its right below H.

I checked the coolant in that plastic container and there's barely anything in there. So I refill it, and I drive for a bit and the needle returns to its normal spot.

But I've been noticing that I have to quite frequently refill that little coolant container behind the driver side headlight. Where is all my coolant disappearing too. Its not leaking under the car.

Any suggestions?

I have that same issue from time to time. My radiator is new, so are my hoses, and I have no leaks. So I have no idea where it goes. Maybe it evaporates.

I have checked my hoses too, but they seem fine. I read that sometimes cooland can leak into the oil. Does any know if this true? and if they're any mechanical problems from this issue?

Signs of a bad headgasket... its essentially evaporating. Do a leakdown test to give you a confirmation.

did you replace your radiator cap? The seal might be bad on it, thus not allowing the system to pressurize properly. Check that. 6 bucks at Autozone.

I'm bumping this up for any more suggestions.

I got a question. If its a bad head gasket, then why hasn't my car overheated yet or even any smoke from the engine? Coolant is disappearing still but I don't see any sign around the head gasket. Or am I looking at the right places.

Tomorrow I'm taking car to get a leak down check. Will they be able to tell me if I have a bad head gasket?

That's the most ridiculous solution to disappearing coolant that i've ever heard.

Do a test with dye and see if you can spot any leaks. Are you blowing any kinds of smoke ?

If it is a bad head gasket, look at the exhaust for white smoke. You can also look for air bubbles in the radiator.

Coolant is also sometimes pumped back into the reservoir when there is a bad head gasket.

The only way you will know for sure is leakdown test.

Mine did this the other day, but it was because i didnt have enough coolant in there. It was something stupid like 80% water, 20% coolant and my car started to get to the brink of overheating, then the fan would kick in and cool it odd. Finally got around to draining it n refilling the right mxture.

Umm o.k. you really sound like you know what your talkig about. You said above to check the radiator cap but he said that his coolant res is EMPTY, and that is exactly were it would go if the cap was bad...pressure into the over flow res. But the exact oppisite is happening he is loosing coolant in his cooling system and it sucks the extra from the res leaving it dry.
I used to run a higher comp ls vtec with a 1 layer head gasket. If I drove the car down to lower altitude and got alot of ping is would blow my head gasket. What would happen is it would let a tiny bit of coolant into my combust chamber and it would burn out. There was no smoke no sign of it doing it but after a while my coolant would get low and the temp would rise. It never ever overheated and if I'd stop and fill up the water it would go back to normal for 3-500 miles before it would get low enough to heat up again. I had this happen 4 or 5 times easy on my car and others cars I have fixed. But a new headgasket fixed it every ******* time. It happens alot. WTF u think happens when you slightly blow a head gasket??? Coolant just evaporating is the most rediculous excuse for coolant dissapering that I have ever heard of. NExt time think **** through or take a look around before you start posting like you know all and are so wrong it's almost funny. THINK before you hit the post button
