Default Stuff

All,

I want to get more power from my 97 ITR. I have looked into a full Mugen setup but am toying with the idea of ripping the cat out. I dont care about emmissions as i can replace for the MOT every year............anyone?.

Next what is the best route to stabilising the back of the car which tends to be a little light when you push it.....camber setup?

And here I thought that light rear (oversteer) was a good thing... My R only seems to break loose under very heavy braking (at ABS threshold).

That lightness in the rear end is a characteristic trait of the Type R....don't get rid of it, just learn to use it to your advantage. Lift off oversteer is a good thing if you know how to use it.

King's lower control arms are meant to be used on GSRs when installing the Mugen Lowdown suspension.

Getting rid of the cat will get you about 3-4 whp, I think.

Switching to stiffer springs will reduce the dive under hard braking and improve transitional response of the car - which is a tad soft for my liking. I found the stock suspension allowed the rear end to get "squiggly" under really hard braking. If you get height-adjustable coil-overs, you can play around with the height of the rear (which is pretty 'high') and ultimately change the center of gravity. I did, and got a great improvement over stock.

The sensations you feel may be due to the stock set-up of front linear rate springs and rear progressive, which tends to be tuned for understeer and safe, predictable handling at 8 to 9/10s but at 10/10ths is a little scary. If you want to go faster and improve handling - lowering the car a couple of inches really makes an improvement - plus you get more aggressive camber which helps out with cornering/turn in.

Also, I found the Mugen adjustable rear wing to have a great stabilizing effect (at fast speeds > 80 km/h) if you set the spoiler to maximum downforce.

If you retain the stock shocks, don't lower it a ton. Aftermarket shocks are recommended in most cases.
