88-91 tranny question...help please!
i just had my clutched replaced and turns out my tranny is bad. something about the seal inside internally and thats why my car is leaking oil. they said i should replace it before my new clutch goes out or else i wasted my money to get it in the first place. but yea my question is what tranny's can i use for my D16A6? do i have to use specifically a 88-91 crx\hatch si cable tranny or can i use any cable tranny? if ya can...just list any tranny's that are compatible with my motor and year and car they are from. thanks guys....
If you have an 88 Model you can get a SI, DX, or HF tranny from an 88.
If you have a 89-91 you can get one from those years.
The Si will be best for acceleration, the DX is middle of the road between acceleration and gas mileage, and the HF is purely for gas mileage.

turns out i need a 90-91 tranny because i just had my clutch replaced for my 91 tranny and i guess the years difference is with the diameter of the clutch disc or something?

thats true but i think the diameter on the clutch disc's are different from the 88\89 and 90\91 years. the 88\89 has a 200mm diameter clutch disc and the 90\91 has a 212mm i think? well that is according to the info i got from this thread.... https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=98181

That is true that the 88s and 89s use a smaller diameter clutch than the 90-91s. However the 89s have the same number of splines on the input shaft as the 90-91s allowing you to use the 90-91 clutch and flywheel.
ummm the guy who did the clutch install said its some internal seal? like all the tranny oil was all drained out and such. he also said there is oil leaking from the bell housing.
um i think your tranny guy doesnt know what he is talking about.i have split some trannies open and i dont remeber there being any INTERNAL seal.are you sure he didnt forget to seal the 2 halves of the tranny housing?or also another external seal that leaks is the one that the shifter rod goes into.this owuld cause the tranny to everntually be oilless.i think your tranny guy is full of ****.also make sure the axle seals arent leaking.if he rebuilt your tranny something tells me he fugged up.now he is trying to make you pay for another one.screw that.i think you better get a second opinion.have the tranny filled and then run the car to see where it is coming from.
i agree with loaded butane. if you are using a '91 clutch, that means you must be using the 212mm flywheel ('90-'91) and so you can still use that clutch/flywheel combo as long as the clutch disk fits the input shaft on the tranny. so the only thing you really need is a tranny with 20 splines, so any from '89-'91.

thanks good info civbeater. well he's not really my tranny guy just some shop that installed my clutch for me. he said the oil was leaking from the car from the bell housing and i think your right about the external seal leaking from the shifter because i did notice when i did my oil change that a lot of oil was on the shifter rod itself so maybe this is where all my tranny fluid went? all he told me was that my tranny had no oil, there is probably some internal problems(sorry not leakage i mistyped that earlier), and leakage from the bell housing and some seal. he said i should replace my tranny before this clutch goes bad cause he said thats what this tranny i have on now will do to my new clutch and he doesn't want that happening. my question is how can i tell if i have an internal problem or even a problem at all with my tranny? to me...it seems fine honestly.

one more thing..when i first bought the car...i looked underneath and the tranny had a big hole in it! like it hit something hard on the bottom casing of the tranny and it cracked right thru. so i jbwelded it up. would that big crack(it was probably a good 6 inches long) be a sign of a bad tranny?
ok i found out the name of that seal. its the MAIN seal. is this inside the tranny? i guess this seal is bad or something and can make the clutch go out? i don't know anything about tranny's so yeah...any help is appreciated. thanks

one more thing...the guy there said i had no gear oil in my tranny but i just replaced it like a month ago. isn't tranny fluid and gear oil the same thing? cause i replaced the tranny fluid...and i'm assuming its the same thing as gear oil?
rear main is on your block.yes with enough oil leaking from it ,it can ruin your clutch because that oil is gonna be sloshing on your clutch disc.anyways are you sure the jb weld held up?you should hve just had a shop weld it properly -end of story.yes the shifter rod seal could possibly run your tranny/gear oil dry.our cars use regular motor oil or honda MTF.good luck
He is talking about the main input shaft seal and yes the big crack would have been enough to think about changing the transmission. Gear oil is different fron the transmission fluid on a Honda. Gear oil is usual 75-90 weight oil (very heavy) while honda trans fluid is like 5w30 motor oil with special additives for use in the transmission. Use Honda MTF or Redline MT oil.

when you say different you mean in weight or do you mean that its completely seperate from the tranny fluid? like you would refill it somewhere other besides where you fill the tranny fluid?
