transmission assembly
anyone who has taken apart their manual transmission, help. i've taken mine apart and put in a quaife diff.. now that i've put it back together, i can't get the linkage to go into reverse or 5th. i've put everything back together exactly how it came apart, but something is in a bind. the transmission is still out of the car, and i've reassembled it 7 times. anyone ever ran into this problem or know of any way to help?
also, when i have the housing apart, i can move the gears into reverse with my hands, but when i try to use the fork to do the job, it binds.
Do you have a helms manual (diagrams are AWESOME for the tranny), and did you take pictures while taking it apart? it may be something is not quite right.
Transmissions are precision devices, so it's probably pretty tricky to put it back together properly.

Hard to guess without looking at it, but it can't be too many things... Are you turning the mainshaft by hand while trying to shift it? Sometimes it won't shift by hand unless you move the syncros some. Check the 5th to reverse stop in the shift cover. Pull that cover off and try directly moving the 5th/rev shift fork. If it's binding, see if you can tell what is stopping it's travel. Check for a bent shift fork on 5th/rev. Check that the reverse idler gear moving fork is in properly and doesn't bind.
did you try to turn the input shaft first sometimes just rotating it will line everything up inside and let it slide into gear, other than that without seeing it I cant really help you.

thanks for the help guys. if i turn the gears enough it eventually goes into gear, but it seems much harder to do than it was before i took the tranny apart. shift forks look fine, reverse idler fork is fine. do you think it's possible that it is so hard to shift because it's not on the car and full of gear oil? i'd hate to put it back on and have to remove it again.
i had the same problem.
i had to open mine all the way up again only to find out i had the reverse fork below the groove in it. i think you may find the same thing if you open it again.
