What oil are you running? How many miles are on the motor?

I'd do a compression check, sounds like your rings are toast.

well it sounds like you dindt break in the engine properly
so a compression test sound good
it is possible that you have damaged your cilynder walls on your new set up

check for blow-by! Blow-by is when the piston rings were not correctly installed and oil is seeping into the combustion chamber. I had a similar problem on my first project.

You can buy a compression tester at Sears for like $20. Was the motor properly broken in? Try 10w30 too.

yeah allmotorjunkie is right...excessive oil consumptions usually indicates worn piston rings either that or they weren't install securely. meaning oil gets pass em and into the combustion chamber and its burned. That explains why u have black smoke coming out of your tailpipe. black smoke means your burning oil somewhere. get that compression test. u can buy a compression tester for like 25 bucks are an auto supply store.

If the rings were not staggered properly the compression test will not show a lost of compression.

sounds like blow-by. I would get a cylinder leakdown tester that will help you alot more than a compression test. If it you do a CLT (cylinder leakdown test) and it blows out the dip stick tube its the rings. hope that helps you
