Default help with my YS1 and my 4.78 FD

i just got a call from my mechanic telling me that this setup is going to take an excessive amount of shims to work, anyone else havew any problems with the 4.78 final drive in a YS1? and what problems do you have?

also he told me that the diff is going to be shimmed so much that the speedo gear will not mesh up properly with the ring gear

HELP!

Good luck driving on the highway with 4.78 My S1 trans has a 4.4FD and I cruise at 4k rpm @ ~74mph on the highway. Just sell the fd and cut your losses.

Are you using an OEM Type R FD? That will work on the "newer" YS1 cable trannies I take it?

If you are using the Type R FD, can you use the LSD with it also?

Sounds like you have quite a project going on.

I took the easier way out and am installing the JDM 98 spec Type R tranny with OEM LSD and 4.7 FD.

I've been waiting for awhile to install that tranny and now it is possible with HASPORT's Hydro Tranny conversion kit.

I'm waiting for some misc. engine parts to get powder coated and then the JDM ITR motor with its OWN Hydro tranny will be installed in my 90 HF. I can't wait!

Good luck with your FD swap.

You can't use the stock differential. You have to use the type R LSD along with the final drive. That's what I did and it dropped right in no shimming necessary.

Also you have to do a little grinding on the housing where the LSD drops in.

Have you done a search on this, it has been done and discussed before.
