Who here has actually broken a stock sleeve due to too much hp?
I have seen pics of stock sleeves getting messed up because of forged pistons, but supposedly that's just because of machining errors. Has anyone ever messed up a stock sleeve due to too much HP? Especially on a D16 motor? I am thinking of upgrading my turbo, but would hate to have to take the engine out again just to sleeve it. I am looking at close to 350whp on high boost, if I upgrade.
I managed to crack the sleeve on a stock b16a at 350whp, all stock internals about 3 years ago. I got to aggressive with the ignition advance, and the engine detonated very hard. Wiped out the piston, rod and cracked the sleeve. Proper tuning the sleeves can hold 500-600whp level.
I'm doing a D16 buildup currently, pistons/rods. My goal is more conservative though, ~200whp quick spool. Everything I read indicates the stock sleeves and crank should be good until 250-300hp, you are pushing that limit. Depends on tuning.
The d16 engine uses the SAME material as the b-series sleeve. The sleeves are the same strength, they are capable of 500whp level.
May 2002 is when I cracked the sleeves on my B16A block, that motor had Endyn RW 9.3:1 pistons and Eagle rods I made 370whp 276ft-lb torque with 21psi, it would not make more hp over that really the TURBO was MAXED out! I went to the track ran a couple of 11.90s, I said **** it turned the boost up a tad, BOOM! White smoke all the way down the track cracked the #3 sleeve. It lasted a good while and alot of abuse though. About 18,000 miles of abuse I would say. It would've last longer with a bigger turbo tuned, I believe it just was blowing HOT AIR due to the inefficiency of the turbo at that boost level.
Also as Jeff stated above stock sleeves are capable of very very hoigh boost levels as long as the tune is DEAD NUTS on! InlinePro has proven this time and time again! Jinxproof's old car has piston and rods in a stock sleeved block with about 550whp and is living strong to this day.

well i crakced the sleeves on my type r motor without boost its easy just get a ecu that has no revlimiter and drive stupid like i used to. needless to say i learned my lesson

I have seen alot of stock sleeves take 300whp all day. With enough fuel and not being stupid, getting unreasonable you will be able to save not only money but time on the build. Most people sleeve as a pre-emptive mearsure so they wont crack the sleeve. Just remember sometiems honda makes things stronger then aftermarket, sometimes.
Haha, same here. I was using a tial and my profec b was set for an internal wastegate rather than an external, spiked to 16 psi as well. Thought I blew the head gasket, pulled the head and the number 3 cylinder had a large crack in it. Most likely due to waaay too much timing.
So the sleeves in the B and D series are the same material and the b series can take over 300whp properly tuned, huh? hmmm... My car is tuned with Hondata by one of the best tuners in Houston and done very conservitly so I think I may upgrade, hmmm..
Could it be that resleeving is overrated? Seems like a lot resleeve out of a preventative measure without ever trying stock sleeves. I guess if you have the money why not get it sleeved, but I'm going to try stock sleeves.

Too much boost with no tuning.
