Default I prefer notchy shifting, possible in Civic?

Ok, so my Miata has a very notchy shifter, where you feel a positive action of going into each gear. IMO, I feel more in touch with the transmission when I get that kind of feedback from the shifter. Having driven and raced with that setup for the longest time, its just what I'm used to and want that feeling all the time.

So going to my Civic, I just put in fresh tranny fluid and everything is fine and dandy in terms of condition of the tranny, but things feel too vague. Yes is it much smoother than my Miata and I do like the lighter feel, but I really want something more notchy.

Can anyone suggest ways to have a heavier/more notchy shifter in my Civic? Would a short shifter more likely increase the effort?

you can get shifter bushings, it will make shifting more direct and notchy.A short shifter will increase effort.

You can also replace the detent ball springs (three of 'em) on the transmission to get a firmer "click" when it goes into gear. All three are probably the same, so you'll need to find one and determine the spring rate specs and find something longer/stiffer.

FYI: since your transmission is connected to your shifter by a linkage instead of the shifter connected directly into the transmission; it will never feel the same as a Miata gearbox.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try swapping out some stiffer bushings and probably a short shifter. I figure the slight increase in effort with the short shifter might give a tad better feedback, but my Miata shifter just feels sooo much better. Will report back.

i have heard that the skunk 2 short shifter "clicks" into gear. I have heard this from numerous people, is that the notchy feeling you are talking about. Unfortunately I can't not speak from experience on this ss, but alot of people on hear swear by it.

What PuppaScuppa is saying is correct.

If it's not possible to find springs that are "stiffer" you may think about using washers to shim the springs. The obvious problem is that you will not know how much to shim up the spring until you install it in the car and test it.
