Default b18cr block.. how did i crack one?

Hey Guys,

My mechanic has told me that I've cracked my JDM Type R block.. he didn't say much about how this happened.. he just said that it's happened.. Firstly, my head gasket blew.. and when they replaced the gasket, the engine wouldn't crank or hold water... he says the block must be cracked somewhere.. firstly, how can this happen? and anyone got any ideas about why the f... this happened? i mean i'm not doing anything special.. I just have headers and exhaust.. I've just had the motor re-done, all the bearings, seals and gaskets.. any idea what could have been or not could have been done which caused this???

Your replys will be most appreciated..

Paul.

I'd want to know where the block is cracked and some idea why the head gasket blew. On a stock motor without overrevving or cooling system problems, I would not expect the gasket to blow out. There could be some internal mechanical problem that started it all. Basically you need a bunch more info.

Was this motor yours from new or is it a used import? If imported, you do not know what kind of life it led before or if it had some internal mods. You need a teardown to evaluate what is left. If only the cylinder is cracked, it should be possible to re-sleeve it.

Might want to check your head for flatness.

Overheating would cause the blown head gasket and the cracked block.

Id definitely ask to see the crack in the sleeve. Sounds kinda odd, I doubt you cracked it. I would check the head to see if its warped. It might need to be milled a little.

If anything the sleeves have cracked and this is a easy fix by resleaving it. Better solution then tossing away a rebuildable block. Have the mechanic show you the damage and if he cant get the car out of there and take it to someone that knows what they're doing and knows how to troubleshoot a coolant/overheating problem.
