Default Emission Testing Blues

I have a Honda 1994 Del Sol, D16Z6 SOHC VTEC. Got it mid July.

I'm having trouble passing our wonderful emissions testing. Failed first test. Figured it may be related to the fact I swapped factory air intake for something that breaths better so I re-installed the factory air intake and got it tested again same day. Failed worse than with modified air intake.

Before attempting a 3rd retest I got new plugs, wires, distributor and rotor, oil change and added the "we'll double your money back if you fail" stuff to a tank of fuel and followed instructions to the tee. After failing the second time I added Berryman's Emissions Pass Protection (State & Federal).

I filled my tank with fuel and added the stuff. Ran the tank out and ran out another 1/4 tank before going back to test the 3rd time. I followed the instructions to the tee.

When you read the fine print regarding Berryman's requirements for getting double you money back - it's a complete joke!!! You have to pass before they give you anything... (save that for a different post though)

Got tested for the 3rd time today and failed again. Did see some improvements but still failed.

Looking for advice on how to reduce CO emission. Pretty close to passing last attempt. Tired of looking at my 30-day tag.

try putting a litre of Methyl hydrate into your FULL tank of gas - should work (methyl hydrate is available at your autoparts store - should only cost a couple bucks.

I went from 3 times the legal limit on all 3 portions for the test to well under the legal limit running a rich Mugen chipped ECU on a GSR motor in my old CRX...(the emissions were based on the D16 that should have been under the hood)

i have a thought for you...how about replacing your o2 sensor....that is sometimes the cause for crappy emissions...if that dosent do it, then change your cat...first o2 then cat...if you have the cash change both...i bet you will pass if those are new.!!

good luck..

Do you happen to know what you failed and by how much? Like was it your hydrocarbons or something? Do you have the stock cat in there? And the reason you probably did worse with the stock air intake is because it restricts air which means less oxygen to burn the fuel, which means more left over fuel after combustions, which means a richer exhaust.

Yes putting your aftermarket intake on will allow your eninge to intake more oxygen and help lower your hydrocarbons.... It's either your Cat or your o2 sensor.. Unlsee your car is burning oil it's most likely a bad cat... Have you ever noticed a strange rotten egg smell coming out of your car? If you have it's definitly your cat!

Thank you for the excellent replies. I think I'll try replacing the 02 sensor. No foul odors (cat) and the car doesn't burn oil. Many thanks.
