Default lightweight subwoofer options.

im looking for a little added bass. i want the lightest setup i can get, powered subwoofer or amp, sub combo. either way.

i just ditched my kicker 360, and a boston pro series 12.5, because of the weight. this hit hard and sounded great. im sure im not going to get anything near that with a lightweight setup, but please let me hear your advice.

-Bazooka bass tubes.
-Infinity Basslink
-8" or 10" sub in a sealed box. Usually about .5ft^3.

I'd say go the fiberglass route....MDF boxes are pretty heavy. You can save some weight there, but even a driver like a JLW0 or a IDQ (both are fairly light) will still be 15lbs for just the driver.

For contrast, I got a pair of ID8v3's in a tiny spare tire well box for a Civic (while keeping the spare) for around 35lbs....I could have gone lighter, but I did some extra trim work on it.

I'd consider porting one 8" and getting one of those tiny little Xtant amps (it's around 6"x6"x2")..

I've only heard about the basslink, but from what I've read, it's the best amp/sub combo out there for the money. And it comes in around 35lbs IIRC.

Baltic birch is much lighter than MDF if you decide to take the ported route.

What does IIRC mean?

Yes and no. They are cheap, lightweight, and they get the job done. However they don't get very loud, or hit too hard. They still do provide the low end that you front stage cannot.

ok i did a little research
hear is what i found

alpine s series 10 inch ---- 13 lbs

image dynamics idq 10 inch ---- 12 lbs

song xplod 10 inch ---- 14 lbs

infinity bass link, amp, sub, and box --- 25 lbs

bazooka 8 inch , amp , sub, box, ---- 25 lbs

Now which is better. how much does this "baltic birch wood" weigh, is it as good as mdf, how much is it.

Baltic birch is about $30 for a 4'x4' sheet (i think). It will perform similarly to MDF and weighs about half as much. I'd take the IDQ over everything else. Expect an enclosure to weigh about 30 pounds + whatever the amp weighs.

where can i get this stuff at. do they sell it at like normal hardware stores. or do i need to get it from a audio shop..

so the IDQ's sound pretty good.? anyone have them. Do they last long, i dont really max out my speakers, but i would prolly have half volume most of the time.

thanks again

Baltic Birch>MDF

thats all there is too it, except price, which is rougly 2x more than MDF. with those subs, 1/2" thick would do..no need for 3/4" thick sheet.

IDQ d4 over anything listed.

http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/MTX4250D

350x1@2ohm. MTX is known to be underrated a bit and it'll put out about 370 or so. i'm sure of that. get the dual 4ohm idq if you're going to get it.

sub weighs i dunno, but amp is only 6lbs! lol. box should be around 15lbs or depending on the size. not bad.

Dare I suggest that you port the IDQ - they sound great sealed, but the low end is even better...~1.5 cubes, tuned to 30Hz. If you have the extra space, I'd definitely recommend ported...

porting sounds great. but remember im going for light weight, and 1.5 cubes compared to .70 is about double the weight in wood.

That's true, but you really have to start thinking what 10lbs is and how important it is to you. If you are going to spend the money buying the equipment, you should do everything you can to optimize the installation....hence my suggestion.

Bandpass is a strange creature....they are very efficient, but over a very small bandwidth. To top it off, that particular box is WAY too small for that particular driver. IF you wanted to put that woofer in a BP, you need 1.7 cubes of NET volume for each chamber - add in the port and driver displacement, and you will be well over 2 cubes.

You are taking a great SQ woofer, and putting it in the "worst" SQ box.....me no likey!!!

I really love the IDQ's, and I've had them in both sealed and ported....do the 0.85 cubes sealed (no smaller) or the 1.5-1.25 cubes ported if you want it to sound great. I've had it in both and while both were great, the ported box was the hands down winner. My ported box was about 40lbs after the driver had been loaded, but it was a slot port, and was fairly heavily braced.

Look to see if you can find some ultra light MDF around....that may be a good compromise b/t the cost of the birch and the ease of regular MDF.

the mtx amp is good. almost 400 watts for 129 is a good deal. just don't go crazy on the amp and you'll be set. besides, u get the warranty.
