JL 12W7 setup...
All,
I have an integ, and I am looking to put a 12W7 in it. I hear for these subs to perform at their best they should have 1000watts cranked through them. However, I am trying to save some weight so, I am wondering, are there any amps that put out over 1000 watts, because I want to put in some new components later, and it would be nice to run a lot of power through those too. I am looking to only have the one amp for the components and the W7.
Thanks,
Jon

It's not going to happen. If your sold on the W7 already them I wouldn't worry about the weight. Between the speaker and box you'll be pushing somewhere around 50-60 lbs. The JL 1000/1 was built with that speaker in mind. But you'll have to get another amp for your components. For that kind of power, and for good subwoofer performance, your going to be looking at a class D (digital) amp for the sub. Class D's are not so hot fidelity wise though for anything other than sub's, so you'll need to get a seperate for the components.

man get something else than a w7........ i heard 1 and to tell ya the truth i was not impressed at all....... get a R.E 12hc or xxx or a beyond audio inhuman..... sound great and will go louder........ if u want an amp to pun everything look at the memphis bell by memphis..........
I am seriously considering the W7 because I could pick it up for $375 NEW including the W7 enclosure. Are these Memphis Bell amps high quality? Which model should I look at that would be able to provide excellent power to the sub and the components, and if possible could you tell me how much it costs?
BTW- weight IS a concern. The 50-60 lbs from the box will be partially compensated for by taking out the spare tire/jack. That should make me only add about 10-20 lbs..... maybe 30 with the amp and cap.
Thanks a lot for the help!

Who is selling a 12W7 that cheap? Cost is $450 on a 12W7 alone. I know this because
1. I work at a stereo shop
2. I have 2 12W7's going into my car.
To answer your question, you will have to get an amp for the sub, and another one for the comps. JL will only be shipping 90 1000/1 the last week of Feb, then normal distribution will start at the end of March. The 12W7 is the best sound quality subwoofer made, hands down. You have to remember that it is a sound quality woofer, so you will have very tight clean sounding bass response. If you're looking for something to pound ghetto music with, go with an IDMAX 12, which is the only subwoofer in a similar class as the W7.
Here is a 12W7 standing next to an IDMAX 12.

Where can you get a W7 for $375? Wanna hook me up? My local store is selling the 12w7 for $750.
I have talked to many people who have lots of experience with car audio. They say the W7 is the best sub they have ever heard. Including SQ subs like Focal.
Agian if you are only getting 1 W7 then your prolly going to want to get a JL amp because most amp put out there max power at 2ohms andthe w7 is a single 3ohm voice coil. I'd recommend the JL 1000/1.
As for components; listen to different sets and decide which sound best.
I would recommend JL XR650Csi's with a JBL P180.2 amp or a JL 300/2. Get the JBL amp if you are wanting to save money.
Do not get 1 amp and try to have it power both your comps and subs, that won't give them the power they need.

I think your referring to the W6v2 and not the W7. They look very similar and there is a world of difference in pricing.
Look on Ebay for a Memphis ST-1000D they are elite amps.. 1 ohm stable and push 1000 watts and are competition class D 90% efficient I got the ST-500D and it ruled my solobaric 12's had two of them and blew them both with it... awsome quality amps
i dont kno bout u but if an amp blows an subs its mainly casue one, the amp is distoring a lot, or two the owner is turning the gains up on the amp too much causeinf distortion and killin the vc. unless the amp has massive watts then the amp shouldnt be able to kill a solobaric or even a pair...in which the memphis st-500d doesnt have, since its a 500 watt amp.

My installer built a sealed MDF/fiberglass/duraglass enclosure (about 1.25 cu.ft internal volume) for a single 12W7 for a 01 Civic Sedan. It was mounted in a left right corner of the trunk and the W7 sat on a neon lit plexiglass ring, had a window on the top showing the fully finished interior of the enclosure, complete with a stroke light and some more neon tubes inside. The enclosure was built like a tank and was bolted to the car. It was seeing about 750 watts RMS off a single Xtant X1001. It slammed and the rearview mirror was out of wack in less than 20 seconds at fully volume. And it's a really nicely detailed sub too.
But anyway it's a nice sub. I heard JL was testing their 12W7s with 250/1s. Here's what they say about power handling in the W7 training guide:
"For sound quality applications, we recommend driving a W7 with an amplifier rated at 50 to 150% of its continuous power handling.
10W7: 250-750 watts.
12W7: 375-1100 watts.
13W7: 500-1500 watts."
