replace boot or axle?
I have a torn outer cv boot on my 92ex. called a couple places and they are tellin me to repalce the axle. car has 127xxx miles on it... should I just go for a rebuilt axle or just the boot. there is no real clicking noise either (very faint)... so I think the cv joint is ok.
I've always repacked my CV joints & put on new boots. But the VW's & Saab's I've owned have more expensive axles. Sounds like Honda axles are cheaper, so maybe it makes sense? How much is your labor worth? Look up the price of an axle & take your pick.

Agreed! Don't forget to check the other side too! lol... No really, if it's a resonable price for the axle, $50-100 bucks or something, then i'd say go ahead and get an axle. Not worth the trouble later on.

what the dealer told me whenit happened on my 5th gen wagon is that if the boot is broken and dirt gets in then you will hear a grinding noise from the axle. if you dont hear that noce then the boot is all you have to change >> i never had noise so i just changed the axle >> that was over 25k miles ago and the car is still perfect. i even dropped it after the boot and still no problems (***knocking wood***)
I decided to just replace the axles. since it is the same cost for labor to replace the boots and it is to replace the axles. and the axles were not that much more than the boots. I ordered the axles from raxles.com - anybody has comments about them??? thanks for the replies

change the axles yourself save the money its not that complicated i say that if you shop around it would probably cost you about the same price to get a boot and grease and clamps for the joints
i went to a local warehouse that sells car parts and got my axle for 30 bucks plus a core exchange 60 before the exchange but you should keep looking
if you tell them your a student theyll give you a discount i had a shop class in this adult program and i got discount from other places like speedshops
usually works.

Like he said I hear a lot of people with problems with the autozone brand of rebuilt axels, I had the boots replaced before they leaked they were just cracked and I've got 286,000 miles on the original joints, given the car is just a stock 5 speed accord but why go thru the hassel of all those replacements when it didn't cost all that much to have the boots replaced? I think the Honda OEM joints are built pretty well? Am I wrong?

the way i see it, if your axles are in great shape aside from the bad boot, i would say replace the boot. I dont trust the cheap rebuilt parts from autozone. Too many stories of people having to go in for hte warranty cuz the rebuilt one crapped out on them, was bad , etc.
it would suck if u got a lower quality/worn rebuilt axle and turned in a perfectally good one as the core.

i just got new axles. raxles puts new cv joints in them. the only reason I decided to just get new axles is b/c my old ones have rust on them. has anybody tried replacin axles?
if yours are rusted on the hub its kind a pain to get them off. if not, they are easy.
one side came off easily for me, the other was a pain, rusted onto the hub. So i had to take it to a shop to seperate (yanked who damn knuckle+axle off).
if you have a manual it would have the stop by steps and diagrams/pictures. you need the axle nut socket, a breaker bar and usually a BFP (big fucken pipe), and maybe a ball joint popping tool. A big flathead screwdriver to pry the axles off.
