Nasty Halfshaft Problems....
Well I snapped another axle today so I tore it down and when I got to the halfshaft, which I had to unbolt because I was putting in a axle seal in the tranny at the same time.... Anyway as I pull out the halfshaft bolts I realize all but one (there are three bolts) have STRIPPED OUT the threads on the block. Has anyone else had this happen? Im thinking about just towing it to a shop and let them re-tap it... its such a hard angle Im afraid I wouldnt tap it straight.

Is this the same axle side that is breaking? This could be either the cause of the axle problem or another problem caused by the breaking axle. Either way, you will have to heli-coil this to fix it right. If you're worried about the angle, go buy a socket-style tap driver. It uses either a 1/4 or 3/8 square drive, fits right onto a rachet. Most good tool trucks have them. Take your time, remember, this is your block you're tapping into! One other trick- if one of the bolts that is stripped is the one that is NOT shouldered, then you may have to install two helicoils on top of each other in that hole, to ensure that you have enough threads. Enjoy.....
Don't use helicoils, get time serts, much more reliable. BTW, what car, engine, trans, halfshaft and axles are you using? and how much power are you putting down?
