Default replacing stock shift ****/boot (96 prelude)

i have a type R gunmetal shift **** with laser cut gears in it with EL blue led style backlight behind the gear numbers/lines - when i took my stock **** off i noticed that the threaded whatever you call it you screw the **** onto goes half way into the stock **** before you even hit threads on the inside of the stock ****. this kinda makes the new **** stick up higher. have any of you cut your shifter down for aftermarket *****? also i got a new black leather boot becuase the stock one has the square plastic **** , i was gona pull the staples on the platic part that clips into the center concel(<- cant spell) and staple or somehow connect the new one in the way the factory one was.

any tips?
