Some interesting stats on S&M Racing, and if any of you want some great web hosting...
First off, while our main page has the counter embedded, and it shows 22,788 hits since we started the page, our jedi server-master greg put up a statistic program that more accurate tracks stuff...how about more than 100,000 hits last freaking month? check this stuff out:
http://www.sandmracing.com/cgi-bin/awstats.pl
Now that i'm working for GRM and Matt is just as lazy as he ever was about updating the site, S&M doesn't get much in the way of new content on as regular a basis as it used to. I plan on keeping the site up for the indefinate future, but i think our server-master has gotten bored without new challenges to face him, and told me to let the world know if you want some FREE webspace to contact him at gsaxer@wilkerstaff.com
This isn't like bobo AOL free webspace. Our videos stream faster than pretty much anywhere else I know of, and greg is generous with space like it's going out of style. The stats speak for themselves. Of course, it's gotta be legal content, etc.
Mods, hope this isn't too off topic, S&M is definately ITR related, and I don't wanna throw this offer up in members forum cuz then poor greg will be NAILED with requests.
Carry on!

Thanks for the info Scott!

of course, if any of you set up websites through greg you HAVE to link to S&M somewhere

Hmm.
I've been looking into having some MP3s of my band hosted somewhere. Been too lazy to set up an MP3.com account.

However...
Why the cheap shot at AOL?
AOL accounts come with 140 megs of Web space with high upload and download speeds, and no limit on bandwidth access.
It's impossible to overwhelm the NoVA servers.
What's "bobo" about that?
</TD></TR></TABLE>
yeah, but they cost MONEY, greg does it for the fun & experience i guess, or he's crazy. And 140 megs wouldn't cover 1/10th of the stuff i've got on S&M...it was over a gig last i checked...
Not a big fan of the AOL proprietary email system either. But that's neither here nor there.

Scott: What's the details on the server? IIS? *nix? if IIS is a MSSQL db server available? if *nix is PHP and MySQL running?
I guess I could just email Greg but figured j00 would know..
might move burnittotheground..

Awesome offer! I also wonder if mysql is running? Either way it's a very generous offer, I have gigs of pr0n requiring hosting(jk!)
I'd like to fool with my site in php.....

Well, details are, every now and again he tells us that we're on an even bigger pipe than before, and that we shouldn't be able to notice it becuase the bottleneck for speed has been on our end since he started it...and beyond that, as far as i know it's run by magic elves named lorenzo.

This is Greg. Here are a couple links that made me think of you guys.
http://homepage.mac.com/howhee...o.wmv
http://lisupras.com/wooo.html
Make sure you do the first link first and the second link second. hehe. I thought it was funny.
Anyways, here is the low down.
I currently have one machine up and runnig. It's an AMD XP1700 running at 1.1GHz with 256MB of ram and a 40GB hard drive. It is connected to 2 T1 lines which allows for ~3.0Mbps of traffic. It's currently running FreeBSD. I'd be happy to install MySQL and PHP if that's what you guys want.
I'm considering setting up a second machine (I think I have been convinced), it will be slower. Most likely a 450MHz machine with 256MB of ram and a 40GB hard drive. It'll have the same connection speeds. It'll be running Windows 200(0 or 3) server with SQL 2000 on it (and anything else you guys may want)
Basically folks, this is for me to learn how to set this stuff up and keep it running. It's a learning thing for me.
I'm also willing to host domain names and host email as you'd like. I have a webmail setup and imap server.
So the catch is, it's not going to be 100% reliable, although I do make an effort to keep it up as much as possible. I will lose sleep if it's down for an endured period of time (read, I will stay up and fix it until it's fixed.)
The other thing is that I'd like feedback, good or bad, this works, this doesn't etc. I'll take as many as I can to keep the server busy, but I'm not going to bog it down. I'm hoping to run them around 50-70% capacity.
And lastly, if you'd like to make hardware donations, I'd be more than happy to incorporate them! (And I mean PC hardware you racing loonies!)

Greg
Greg: PHP/MySQL =
bigtime.
As for Win2k and MSSQL on a 450MHZ P3 or P2 don't even bother. MSSQL takes up ALL available memory unless you config it otherwise and will run like an absolute dog on such an outdated machine (no offense intended, MSSQL is just a fuggen hog that's bad enough on a dual 2.4ghz xeon/3gb ram rack server.. granted the usage will be different but still.. )
Not saying don't do so for a learning experience but there's probably a lot of MS ****** here so if you make that one too public it'll die a horrible and slow death
As for hardware donations.. I'll see if I have anything.. mosty of my boxes are workstations or slow **** servers (PI-233 = linux firewall booting off a floppy, no harddrive/cdrom/etc, PII-450 = linux workstation, Pentium Pro 200MHZ = NT4 fileserver (pr0n/mp3 for internal lan), P4 1.8ghz = winblows workstation).
I do have a Cel 600mhz proc and mobo.. however.. it's acting weird.. works with some power supplies but not others.. kinda strange. if I can find out for sure what's going on with that I might have that to send to you.
Do you need anything in particular? SCSI drives? IDE drives? I have a few 9.1GB SCSI drives sitting in a box somewhere..
also have most of a RISC (RS6000) machine laying around somewhere but that's just about damned uselsss

Oh, I'm going to bother.
Users can comment on speed. Basically, if you think it's that bad, I suppose I need a case, a mobo, and a processor. I think a GHz processor would be fast enough for basic usage. I think I put the FreeBSD computer for less than $200. I need to quit spending money on toys though. My main windows computer at home is only a 550!
Oooooo..... a RS6000 machine. I have a Dec Alpha and a SparcStation and an UltraSparc 5..... Can you top that?
I'd hate to take financial donations and buy parts, but I'll do it if you guys want me to......

hmm nah. couple of RS6000's here, Sunblade 150 and a ultra 10.
oh wait....
how about a ES/9000/9394/9395 storage mainframe with 3490/E tape units? plus a reel to reel tape storage solution (not connected anymore).
all combined that's about 5-6feet tall, 10 feet wide and 3-4 feet deep of awesome mainframe technology.. can YOU beat that?

J/K, I wouldn't wish that headache on anyone.
