of all the rotten bloody luck
My AC compressor clutch went ****-up on me, right before I'm supposed to drive to Austin (this Friday).
Now I hope it's only the clutch, but with the God-awful racket it made I wouldn't be surprised to find I've spun the bearing and fux0red the compressor housing.
Mondays suck.

I can relate...my A/C belt is slipping right now, a lot. It's loud, obnoxious...and doesn't work. I bought a new belt today, I need to install it asap. I drive a black GS-R, black leather interior; equals "way too hot" for this time of year.
Good luck w/it! It's hotter down there.

When my pully went, it made a horrendous noise as well.. Are you sure it's the clutch?

Yeah, I'm sure it's the clutch. The pulley on the compressor wobbles pretty bad and the bearing is making noise.
I called the dealership about a new clutch. $200. Ouch. They didn't even kiss me first.
Ebay to the rescue. I got a complete compressor from a guy in Houston for $150. Should have it by tomorrow night.
As for yanking the AC, no way in hell. I live in Texas. We have eight-month-long summers and are no strangers to triple digit temps with 95% humidity. It was 107 yesterday. **** that ****. My car has been sitting in the garage since my compressor went bad. As far as I'm concerned the car may as well not even run because a car without AC in Texas is not drivable.

GAWD damm that sucks. My a/c just stopped working on monday too. I can still hear it come on, the clutch doesn't seem to make any abnormal noises either. I'm going to the beach next week and would love to have a/c for the ride there!
Can I buy a gauge to test the pressure level?

About a year and a half ago my AC compressor SEIZED while getting onto an interstate. I about soiled my pants when the belt suddenly started screeching like a banshee. Got the car to a buddy's house and the compressor threw up all of its grease around the pwer steering pump. What a mess.

Yes.
Some of the refill kits come with guages. Take a look around at your local parts store, and good luck.

Yay!
My new compressor works beautifully, and the old one still compresses well. I haven't taken off the old clutch to check on the housing, but if it's in good shape I'll keep it for a spare.
Life is beautiful when you have AC.

Great news, hopefully I can get mine fixed too. I bought a recgarge kit from pep boys, the adapter that goes onto the low-side port broke the first time I plugged it in
. Pep boys to the rescue again.
I returned for another, and did it last night. They system already had adequate pressure(25-30psi) but I evacuated it and recharged it, hoping for the best but I had a feeling it would not matter. Air still hot as hell
So, the I hear the clutch engage when I hit the a/c button, I also hear the increased engine load. The green light is on the a/c button. Could a fuse or relay still be the cause?
I'm leaving tomorrow for a weeklong trip to the beach, boy would I love to have my air back!

I'm no expert, but I'll try to help.
When you evacuated the compressor, did you have the air vacuumed out of it as well, or did you just vent it, close it and refill it?
Also, how much refrigerant did you put in? I used two 12 oz. cans, and it took a good 20 minutes to get it all in. It didn't start blowing cool air until well into the second can.

Thanks for the help MK. I should clarify a bit on what I did.
I first tested the system, came up in the range it should be 35-40psi. I then released some of the refrigerant, but not all. I just wanted to lower the pressure in the system so I could add new refrigerant. I hooked up the can, let it fill until the bottom third of it was frosty. I then checked and realized I over charged it (60psi) so I let some out until I got to 43-45psi; which is recommended.
The air is still hot as hell, and it's in the high 90's here now.
I am going to check my shop manual when I get home to see if there are specific troubleshooting steps to take. If anyone has one handy and could check now i'd appreciate it!

I wonder how many of you advising the removal of AC are willing to remove your stereos.
Seriously, what is the point of ditching the AC on a daily driven car? Are you really that desperate to lighten your street car by 40 lbs.?

Street racer yo... plus u get like 2 more hp.
Personaly i'd rather lose the hp and have more weight so my nuts don't sweat everytime i'm in my car.

****, I'd keep my AC even if taking it off added 50 hp and removed 500 lbs.
Nothing like the placement of that driver's side vent. It's in just the right spot to allow you a nice, cool breeze simply by lifting the left leg of your shorts.
