do a compression test or get one done! this can tell you how the internals are doing! take a close look at the body, make sure all the fenders line up correctly, sometimes crashed vehicles have bent frames, making the fenders not line up.
how much is he asking????

run a carfax report if you're unsure about any details. Ask to see the mantinance records, make sure things like the timing belt/water pump were replaced, if over 90,000 miles....also take it for a test drive as mentioned and a compression test if you're planning on modifying the car will deffinately save you a headache or two. See if you can tlak him down a little no matter what he's asking as well, as you will need to make nescessary tune ups and other small repairs when you first get the car.

Also, find out why it is being sold.... don't be afraid to ask questions like that. Make sure the alignment is straight (another good sign of a wrecked car is really bad alignment)

I wonder how the owner will feel when u start to take stuff out to do a compression test. I'd be nervous.

also...look out for rust spreading just behind the right/rear wheel well. it's very common on 4th/5th generation honda accords and sometime sellers will try to cover it up. it's not hard to spot, if you do buy it and start to notice it, make sure you get it taken care of ASAP !!!!! that means AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! I made the mistake of waiting, thinking it would fix itself and it's now grown to where it'll cost me about $400 to fix when it should have costed me about $20 for paint and sandpaper. gl!

I think $5.5K is a good deal. I bought my 95EX 5spd coupe w/ 102k miles for 6k after asking down the price, originally he was asking for 6.3k. So you should try to negotiate w/ him.

you can ask the owner to take it to your mechanic if you're really serious. auto trannys tend to crap out fast on hondas too. make sure the power windows move well too.

What they said yeah. I have a 95 EX Auto and there isn't the first problem with my car. Have compression checked, check the front end, CV Joints/boots, spark plugs, oil, etc. Here's my car:
