Default motor breaking in

how long does it normally take to break in a motor with new pistons and rings, also new valvetrain, is it typical for it to burn excessive amounts of oil

change oil at 10-20 miles and at 500 miles use good oil not synthetic until later after the 500 miles if you want to.
don't hammer it for 500miles i couldnt wait.
this is what i did and this is what my machinist told me when i got my motor done.
i used castrol GTX and a K&N filter.

The way I was told to break in a motor correctly is to drive it conservatively for 500 STREET miles. Meaning stop and go traffic and not on the freeway that way the bearings get broken in properly with the revs going up and down and what not. Then change the oil after the 500 street miles and check the oil to make sure there arent any big debris in it.

but what about the vavletrain? no one said if you need to do anything, say, if you just had your top end rebuilt and bottom end stays the same.

i dont think it matters too much if vtec is connected or not when breaking in motor, i mean when u buy a car from honda u can go in vtec anytime u want

There are so many ways to break in a motor... you could take my info, or anyone else's info and do it to your motor... just depends on what the purpose of the motor is... Do you want a street break in, or a race break in? Keep in mind that the race break in will need to be inspected after the first part of the season.
