Crane rotor conversion kit question.
Ok, this is probably going to sound stupid but, I went to Jegs tonight looking for a distributor cap and ended up getting Crane's fireball cap and conversion kit. Has anyone installed one of these and do I have to have any other upgraded ignition parts? Like an external coil or something? I don't know jack about ignitions and I hope I didn't just waste 70 bucks of my girlfriend's money
after 3 seconds of a google search...
it's more than obvious you need the coil.
the whole point of the kit is to "convert" to an external coil... so if it didn't/doesn't come with one you're going to need one...
I did the msd one on my car...
it's realatively straight forward... but you have to wire the coil which is kinda lame...
the wires come off the ignition control module (icm) which is under the dist. cap... so msd told me to tap those wires and run them to the external coil... problem being they don't include a notch or hole for the wires to exit the cap...
I think it's possible to use the wires outside of the cap but not positive... as it doesn't run through the "icm"... I played it safe and used the proper wires in the proper location but this leads to you essentially having to pinch those wires between the cap and the oring seal... which in my opinion is not ideal... but it has worked with no problems for me for over a year...
Also many will tell you it's pointless (which is kinda true)... there are some very seriously modded track cars that still run the stock ignition coil... however I did notice a sharp increase in throttle response and smoother running.
