Default clutch died in audi... need help (everyone look)

my dad has a 2001 audi s4 and he recently got an apr chip and exhaust for it. stock torque to the crank is ~250 ft/lbs. with the new mods it is around ~400 ft/lbs. since my dad got the mods i have been the primary driver of it because he just got an s2k and has seemed to have lost interest in his audi. well, after a couple of thousand miles the clutch has started to slip a little...

the way i noticed it was that i was slowing down for a light and at ~25mph i was still in 4th gear but then i had to accelerate again so i didnt shift down due to laziness. well, the rpms went straight up about 500 and then slowly caught and it started to accelerate normally.

i know that the clutch is slipping, i know why, and i dont need help on how to fix it or how to diagnose it or anything. my problem is that my dad doesnt believe me that his mods are the problem. i tried to tell him that its because of all the newfound torque and that the stock clutch cannot handle it but he says it is my fault... i just need you guys to testify for me that when you add so much power to a car, the clutch is going to wear out much faster unless it is upgraded. please vote. thanks.

That is common sense... When power output exceeds stock #s, the stock clutch isnt going to hold. Besides, getting a new clutch isnt a bad idea...

All the newer Audi and VW products have fairly weak clutches. A lot of VW 1.8t's got new clutches under the 24k warrenty even stock. The AWD Audi's are even worse. I've been told that VW/Audi consider the clutch to be a "fuse" in the drivetrain to keep more expensive parts from breaking. Launching with any boost will cook the stock clutch very quickly. Roll it off the line really easy then step on it after the clutch is fully engaged.

That's the 2.7 twin turbo? I've heard the term hand grenade about that motor but not heard the specifics on what goes bad. The turbo lifespan will be shorter, how much depends on how much of the 400fl/lbs you use and how often. Most dealers will not warrenty the turbos or motor after chipping. Just so you know.

thanks for typing all that. like i said, i know all this stuff but my dad wont listen to me... having someone else reaffirm what i tell him should convince him tht i am right. the chip he has can be turned on and off with a password on it... theres really no way for the dealer to know that its there unless the open up the ecu and see that its chipped. the clutch should be covered under warrenty as long as they dont find out about the chip.... something i'm pretty sure they wont be able to detect.

I had to vote against you just to be different, I hope you don't hate me for it. I really have no idea about your driving skills. But neither do the others!

What they're saying is all true. When you upgrade the power, you need a stronger clutch. I'm not disagreeing with that. You need a stronger transmission too, along with stronger driveshafts, suspension control arms, etc.

But I bet NONE of the others have ever ridden in a car with you driving?? It's entirely possible that your clutch skills suck. On the other hand, I bet your dad has ridden with you...

You should check out audiworld.com and see what other owners of S4's with APR chips do to their clutches. I'm sure a bunch of 30 year olds with fried cltuches will convince your dad.

i would say it died because of the mods (though this is assuming that you are a good driver). even if you were a bad driver, the clutch would still go out with all that power, just that bad driving would speed up the wear out process a little faster.
