Default Sputtering and RPM needle jumping.

I have a SOHC ZC in my CRX. Since yesterday, if i take my car anywhere passed 4K the RPM needle will jump around and the car will sputter, like its misfiring or something. No CEL codes or anything. Itll happen under any throttle condition, WOT, slight throttle, anything, it'll happen everytime its over 4K. I checked all the plugs and theyre good, i just changed the cap and rotor yesterday, still nothing. What do you guys think? It has a rebuilt distributor that i got about 4 months ago. Its been running great until yesterday. Do you guys think its the distributor? It's still under warranty so i was gunna take it back tomorrow... anyone think they can solve this?

Either the distributor or possibly a loose ground? Check the ground by the thermostat housing. But well sicne the distr is still under warranty might as well get a new one too!

Sounds like a bad ignitor to me. Try testing it.

Its gotta be a problem in the wiring harness. Check all the leads in the distributor and the 12 wires that are in the connection. Have you messed with the ECU wiring? Usually if the RPM needle is bouncing like that, a wire lead in the distributor is loose or disrupted. You can try another distributor and see if it fixes it, if not, its in the harness or internally. Check for bubbles in the coolant.

BTW.. Konno gave you a warranty on that swap? I know Andy and most of the guys that work there, in fact i did some work there when they were just starting up.. Good luck with the preblems.

Shoot i forgot if there was a warranty or not. Yea i kno the guys there, Greg Garret and andy are kool as hell. I kick it with greg and Garrett almost every weekend. The other guy Nate i dont really know that well though. Im hoping its just the distributor, seeing as how those things go out all the time (damn rebuilt POS's). Could a bad distributor O ring lead to this also? When I took off the old cap to put the new one on it was kinda oily in there

The oil shouldnt have any effect on the rpm jumping around like that, maybe if it was FLOODED with oil. Replace that o-ring, cause the dizzy can get messy like that. This may sound stupid, but obviously check the plugs wire.. are they in the right firing order? I know about those distributor problems, I own 7 d16 distributors.. and only like 4 of them are any good.. they dont take well going 8000rpm.
Yeah konno is a good place, Andys a good mechanic.. Me and my brother did some work for him about a year back.. Looks like his place is doing well now. You say you come down to Pasadena a lot? Were you one of those guys who was kickin it in the ralphs parking lot that one night?

wait...are you the guy with the black EF? I have the red CRX with the fake spoon rims But anyways, yea, I checked the plug order, checked to see if the 2 dist. connectors were ok, checked cap and rotor and everything was fine. I got the swap about 2 weeks ago and everythings been fine until yesterday, it just happened all of a sudden.

K put the new dizzy in and it runs perfect now. Turns out when i got the original dizzy it didnt have an o-ring, but i didnt notice. So it was leaking oil, after a while the oil worked itself into the dizzy and screwed up the sensors inside. The new one has an o-ring so hopefully it'll last. I guess the other dizzy was slowly screwing up because after i put the new one on, i felt a really noticable power increase. Stupid thing scared me though, i was driving around testing it out and about 5 minutes later the CEL came on. Went home n checked it and it was a code 6 and 14. After a bit of cursing and punching things, found out it was just a loose coolant temp plug (which by the way was drenched in oil, stupid *** leaks.
