Anyone heard of 4-3-1 header?
I over heard a couple of guy talking about header as they were looking at the lastest issue of SCC at Barnes & Nobles in West Covina. One dude was saying that the 4-1 was for high-end and 4-2-1 is much better for low-end and everyday uses. Then his friend said that there will be 4-3-1 coming out soon. It will be strong from low to high end. The smart one argued that such is not possible but his misinformed friend insisted that 4-3-1 will come out for sure; he saw it on the net. I think they are in high school or starting college. On the way home I told my wife about the conversation and she replied that it is not possible. No! she said what will you do with 1 extra exhaust port? I told her I have no idea but my car has (2) 3-1 header.

4-3-1 would be a stupid configuration because 2 of the primaries would merge and 1 wouldn't. This would make the flow characteristics different between the cylinders.

The 4-3-1 header design seems to used for packaging reason, yet it doesn't seem to reduce performance all that much. A 4-3-1 header is quite an elegant way of making an unequal length header for inline-four (or V8) engines, and I'm surprised that no aftermarket companies sell them for Honda engines for owners who want a unique sound (albeit perhaps not the most optimal performance)!
