Default Compression test question - low numbers on one cylinder

I just did a compression test for a buddy with a '98 R. His numbers were 215 across all cylinders except for number 4 which reads 175. We added a teaspoon of oil, and redid the test, the numbers went to 215.

Since the car is out of warranty, how long can he drive it without having to rebuild it? He doesn't have the money for a rebuild, but he figures that he will buy a beater over the winter and rebuild it then (4-5 months away). Are there any precautions that he should take driving the car until then?

if it isnt burning oil or coolant it shouldnt be that bad to run. sometimes thicker oil helps with the compression.

Try adding American Automotive Engine Restore. This stuff has been known to help with worn rings. A buddy of mine swears by this and adds a can with every oil change. He had a 97 Type R same problem, added a can of this stuff, and no more problem. Compression is equal across all cylinders. Hope this helps.

how much does it costs to replace the rings anyhow? and how hard is it for oneself to do it by themself? i imagine all u need to do is remove valve cover n then cams, and u'll be able to get to the rings? correwct me if im wrong, i dont know much bout internal work....

How can this be? Either they messed up the compression test, or you just think that it runs strong
