We recently swapped a 98 gsr motor with a b16 head (w/gsr cams & throttle body) into my 92 cx hatch. Everythng is fine but everytime I hit vtec the check engine light comes on....it's code 21 which is vtec spool solenoid i believe. Well we're still using the obd1 p-72 and we looked in the haynes manual and it says " code 21 vtec spool solenoid (gsr only) So im guessing since i put the b16 head on it it's just not there...and the ECU isnt getting any signal. Anyway is this something I should fix or is it alright. Once the car is cut off and i restart the CEL isnt on until i hit v-tec...i could drive all day and shift at like 4 grand and the CEL never come on. Anyway we also changed vtec solenoid to make sure it wasnt that. Thanks for any help.

Did you use a VTEC engine harness or the stock CX engine harness? I would say the problem is in the wiring but without seeing it I can only assume, and you know what they say when you ASSume.....

 

I used an obd1 gsr harness. I have the vtec grounded and ran to a4 in the ECU....the vtec oil thing is at d6. Is ths correct? I checked all connections and they are good. It seems vtec is working though....I only have an intake (not cold air) and a POS ractive exhaust and it seems to pull decent on high end. In the manual it said gsr only....but im not the smartest guy when it comes to these things.
