Default VAFC vs RPM Switch

Ok, I'm swapping my a6 head with a y8. I'm wondering about the whole vtec situation. Should I get at VAFC or get something like the Summit RPM switch?
I'm somewhat a beginner...ok, I'm a beginner to this stuff, and in my area finding a dyno is a rare occurance, and extremely expensive. I wouldn't really be able to do much tuning with the vafc is what I'm trying to say, not for a while atleast.
Should I start with the rpm switch and after learning more work my way up to a vafc? I basically just want to be able to have vtec up and running when I put the head in etc. Or could I just keep the vafc at it's factory settings and not have to worry about it until I decide to get it tuned?
Let me know
I'll be using the stock ecu from my 90 Crx si.
TIA
Jon

if you don't have an ecu that you can tune getting the rpm switch will work but you won't be able to supply the extra fuel you will need in vtec, thus running lean and not making power or even worse running too hot. I have heard this a thousand times....save for the vafc, it will be safe and allow you to add the extra fuel you need. good luck

so a vafc and my stock ecu is ok? I don't wanna haveta deal with the time and money into changing to obd1 or obd2.
I looking through other posts right now and getting confusing answers. Some say the vafc wont control vtec it'l only add more fuel...some say it will...

1) Will a VAFC activate vtec
2) Will it add the needed fuel (after tuning of course) that I'll need for vtec even without a vtec ecu.

Thanks!

You can add or take away less or more fuel with a VAFC BUT this I've only seen on VTec ECU's I take t your trying to run a VTec motor on a Non-VTec ECU. I don't think you can with a VAFC since the VAFC hacks into the VTec wires going into your ECU which is what how it changes it. Basicly doing it this way will just like runnning a VAFC on a non vtec motor you can change the fuel but no vtec... you'll just have to run a remote switch or RPM switch. The VAFC works off the VTec pressure sensor , BTM wire , MAP , and Vtec soliniod going to the ECU you have non.. kind of understand ?

I think I gotcha.
I just checked out Zdyne's site and they list that they can take my 90 crx si ecu and chip it or whatever

"The B16A One Wire Conversion is the fastest and easy way to run your hybrid. No RPM switch boxes or harness swaps required - Run just a single wire for your engine swap!
Unlike all other "B16 retunes" the ZDYNE B16 One Wire Conversion comes complete with VTEC solenoid control built into the ECU. Full VTEC operation with sensitivity for water temperature and throttle position. Fuel and ignition curves are doubled and recurved for correct operation of VTEC and non-VTEC modes. Road tested and now dyno tested to within 1 peak HP of B16A JDM ECU!

Perfect for B16A VTEC engine swaps or D16Z6* / D16Y8** VTEC head swaps
*The 88-91 Si/HF distributor is required. **88-91 Si/HF distributor bolts right on!
"

Sounds like the best way for me to go since it's only around $300ish which by the time I was done with a vafc etc I'd be at that price anyway..

Says it'l work for d16y8 head swap which is what I'm doing.
I'm not sure what they do to it or how it'l work, I'm going to email them..
Any other info is much appreciated!

Unfortunately I don't have almost a grand to drop into the gold. but that's ok for now. I'll get the one wire kit most likely.. If I get mega serious into this then maybe someday I'll do the gold, but for now I gotta cheap out.
Thanks for the help

You can run yonon obd vtec ecu with an afc, and adjust fuel and everything, you are just better off with the obd1 and then afc for tuning. But unless you got a cam, or any forced induction its not needed.

use an rpm switch, get your current ecu chipped with the y8 vtec maps and timing and have your cold rev below the vtec activation point

Will zdyne do that? Will they map to y8 or will they just use like, a standard that they use?
I guess I should probably ask them. LoL.
I'll email em and then post what they say for future ref.
