Here's some math:
260,000 kms + 8700 rpm + 2 1/2 litres of oil + double apex left hander = one dead R.
So I guess that must be the expected lifespan of a track/street R. I didn't have a good weekend. It's not like it wasn't expected, I just didn't want it to happen THIS weekend. My car's making this knock knock knock noise. It's very violent. When I put my hand on top of the valve cover it feels like something is banging right below, but most people think it's a bearing or something. I think it's time for a blueprint. Long live the mileage king.

Are you saying you were 2.5L of oil LOW?

Eh?

How many miles is that? Around 150,000 or so?

It's over 160000 miles. Not bad I think. I was about 1 1/2 litres low. I forgot to check, and then when I was having problems with VTEC engaging I figured I was low, so I was going to pull off... but then I noticed that I really did have to pull off. Ugh. Damn the world!

It was truly a sad day seeing that!! That engine was truly legendary! It will live on in the stories I tell my kids and they tell their kids and so forth.

It was so fitting that it died the perfect death. Driving hard in full song to the bitter end.

I hope all is better in the next few weeks as you resurrect the beast. Keep smiling

Regards,
Doug

Pull your oil pan and check your main/rod bearings - likely a spun bearing.

Sorry to hear that. I just turned 93K miles recently in my 97.
Thinking of swapping to higher compression/JDM pistons?

What year is your ITR? I am looking into a used ITR but i am always a little reluctant in purchasing a used one. Most people who buys ITRs would beat the living day light out of them hence leave a dead ITR. Was the motor still pulling strong till it died on you? How often do you go to track events? Thank You.

JUST THINK, IT COULD HAVE BEEN A LOT MORE MILES IF ONLY YOU CHECKED THE OIL
Keep in mind that this engine had been tracked regularly since it was first weaned from the Honda Bottle! 260,000km speaks volumes about this engines strength. The fact is the engine was starting to burn oil this was likely going to happen sometime soon. But man what a run!

here, here!

Regards,

Thanks. It was pulling really strongly just before it died:

This year I could only run a 14.6, but I got down to a 14.39 last year with a light flywheel. I wouldn't worry about buying a used STOCK ITR, but I'd be worried about a modded one. I took my car racing very often except for a year and a half when I was raving. I just hit the 600 mile mark on my way to the first autocross. It was driven very hard, but I don't consider it abused. Maybe it's just semantics... I was bumping the rev limiter when it happened (that's what it's there for, right)?

Yeah, I didn't check my oil and that probably did it in, but it's hard to keep up. I've been burning a couple litres per lapping day this year. I just filled the oil a couple weeks ago, so I assumed it would be fine. Oh well. I'm hoping for a little more power after blueprinting and another 260000 kms! Maybe this time I'll actually check my oil before lapping. Maybe I'll even change it more often than every 20000 kms. Hrm...

Never a happy ending. Blueprint, rebuild and get back in the saddle. Keep on rolling.
