Default Oil Coolers...anyone using them?

I did a search and there were only 3 posts regarding oil coolers. The longest post had like 5-6 links on different kits for sale online. My question is how many of you guys actually run with these on your setup? Do you notice any increase in performance with these on your motors? How much cooler does your motor run (for those with a temp gauge)? I'm gonna be road racing my motor in the desert so i'm just being careful. TIA.

Well, first I'd get an accurate numerical oil temp gauge (read: autometer) and then try finding your ideal oil temperature by doing some runs at different temps and try and figure out when the engine runs at it's smoothest. You don't want to have the oil too cool because the engine won't produce max hp. Most likely though since you'll be doing long runs in the desert you'll need an oil cooler to keep your engine happy. Just remember that overly hot oil destroys the engine and too cool and your engine won't be running as great as it can.

good point...if the oil is too cool then i don't make max hp...i'd rather have that than a blown motor...

the question would be, should we try to aim at a certain temp? because, after the oil cooler you need to play with oil viscosities to help you with the temps.

What does everyone think about this?

If you are worried about overcooling your oil, then try and find a Honda B-series cooler. They are water cooled, so the cooler will actually heat the oil (coolant takes half the time to warm up as the oil) until it gets as warm as the coolant, then it will start cooling it. Natural thermostat. They should be pretty easy to find, they are on so many cars. You could probably even hook up the Accord one, the only difference is how the water lines come out of the cooler.

i have a GSR motor now and i wanted to put on an oil cooler kit on it...found a B&M kit from JEGS.com for cheap...strictly for imports too. it's not too expensive...like $100 or so + shipping. i plan to road race her in button willow which is in bakersfield...desert. i want some peace of mind that i won't blow it up on the track when i race...

if you gonna autocross, then i would say defenetely get it.remember to also get the little valve thermostat thingy that opens flow to the cooler at certain temp.

I don't think the coolant pipe on b-series cars that weren't equipped with the factory cooler has the bung you need hook up the coolant hoses.
