Default SUPERCHARGING: Boost Timing Controller and MAP Controller question...

How badly (if at all) would I need a BTC or MAP controller if boosting over 6psi (like 8 or 9 psi)? And why do I NEED them?

you'll need the BTC if you dont want to loosed power. the BTC is used so that you can use stock timing until boost kicks in, at which point the timing is gradually retarded proportionate to boost. so the BTC is basically keeping you from loosing power.

the map controller depends on how you're doing the fueling....if you're using an FMU like what JR supplies, then the map mod will be needed to prevent tip-in detonation. however if you're using larger injectors along with a VAFC or SMC then you will have no need for the map controller.

What's "tip in detonation", I'd love to read more about related topics, thanks.

its when you first step on the throttle, the motor will ping because there is not enough fuel at first.

What about a J&S Safeguard unit? Would it replace anything?

In addition to boost retard and knock retard, the J&S includes an adjustable MAP Limiter, and TPS modifier.

Here's a link to the install diagram:

importparts.com has great prices on them.

You won't need EITHER of them if you use a Hondata S200B and its about the same cost. The Hondata can be tuned to pull timing in relation to boost (and the base maps do exactly that)

Above the stock boost though you will need SOMETHING to do whats been described in the posts above.

I have a J&S classic just to be safe but I think it pulls a little too much timing at high RMP because its hearing valvetrain noise.

If boosting that much, I would spend the money on the hondata s100b unit. You can get it for $400. Well worth the money.
