Problem with VSS...any ideas?
hey guys, i need your help. My check engine light comes on every so often(like every other week) now and it shows that i have a vss malfunction. im wondering if its cause of my fields or because i need a new sensor? anyone else have this problem? should i solder my connections or is the tape good enough? thanks
oh and i also had a map sensor problem before that but it never came on again so i left it alone. hasnt come back since

You very well could have a bad VSS Sensor..
take the sensor out and check it for any visual damage i.e. worn pickup,cracked/broken housing..
And after your done checking that one, might as well check the other 2!
Most cars have 3 VSS Sensors..
Mainshaft
Countershaft
VSS Main

Honda Trannys in the early to mid 90's developed a control unit to work in conjuction with the ECU called a "TCU" or "TCM" I have 3 or 4 of these units in my tool box at work, a result from flood victims..
These cars with these units have 3 different speed sensors and the "vss malfunction" code can pertain to any one of those vss sensors and is not sensor specific..
As described above, Mainshaft VSS,Countershaft VSS and the Main which sends signal to the odometer/speedometer ( for those of you leasing vehicles, this is the one you unplug to disable the odometer!)
Why the sensors on the Mainshaft,Countershaft?
Beats me...I don't know everything
.. I believe it has to do w/ the "overdrive/sport" function on certain models, cause the vehicles w/ that option are the ones with the combination of sensors..
anyone remember the "trans nut" recall on 91 Accords!?
