Noticed today, driving in 2nd, at around 30mph, coming off gas from 3k rpm and coasting, i can hear a quiet clonking noise (metal type banging) emitting once every second,, a bit like bottom end wear, but not as rapidly.
I can also feel the slight vibration through the steering wheel from the knocking.
Have noticed a slight knock when droppin large-ish revs rapidly on gearbox when going 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd... ( changing gear quickly )
this sound is perhaps coming from under the shifter.. but i could be mistaken.
Clutch grip is fine, its not slipping at all....
the car's done 87k miles,4th Gen VTEC....I'm persuming wheel bearing, gearbox or some sort of mount problem.... but the problem is mainly when coming straight off the power,,, not so much in higher gears.. more in 1st & 2nd...
Does anyone have any experience with this type of noise, or any suggestions?
I think the abuse is catching up with me , i was wondering when my troubles would begin.
Any helpful advice welcomed.
Cheers.

I was able to fix a similar sounding problem in my 5gen by tightening motor mounts. There were some that had loosened up over time. I don't know why it would cause a periodic noise every second though. Mine was a clunk or two when getting on or off throttle. More noticable in lower gears.

UPDATE.
Phil thanks for the help.
However....
I took the car out about 20 minutes ago.
I have now discovered the clunking is only occuring when going LEFT, and the frequency of the knocking/clunking is proportionate to the speed i'm going.....
I'm lead to believe now that its a transmission part...... WHEEL BEARINGS in the left??
or what?
Driveshaft??? I've had no knocks or bumps or anything....except from a horrible mistake a week ago where i'd removed the front left wheel.. and not tightened the wheel bolts up tight...but i pulled over within 50 yards and re did them up......
I've got to persume this is how this problem has occured...
Wheel bearing swap? Easy Job?
Any signs that i should be looking for if this problem is more severe???
thanks for the help.. i need this sorted asap.
cheers guys

Sounds like a Bad CV. Look under the car and check for the abvious blown boot. I doubt it's a wheel bearing. I just got done going through that with mine, and a wheel bearing tends to make a wobbling/grinding sound all the time. Even when going in a straight line. So look into the blown CV thing.

Problem Solved.
After literally not sleeping a minute last night, worrying about how much new CV would cost plus fitting,, i decided to go investigate at 5am,
removed wheel, discovered 2 wheel lugs were now only finger tight.. CV boots were fine..gave axle a tug and giggle,, no movement,
so i put wheel back on. made sure it was sitting flat and torqued the nuts back up,, took her for a run.. and no more knocking whatsoever....
i think some funny guy tried to have a go at stealing my wheels, or trying to sabotage this good thing...
haters man!
anyways,, thanks to Phil & Frozen for trying to diagnose my problem, now i can sleep.
Cheers Fellas.
regards
