valve breathers?
i read about those little valve breathers with the spent gas and stuff, and i found out K&N and Weapon R make some of those little breathers, but I'm confused on how to install one, just disconnect that little hose that goes from the intake tube to the valve cover on the left top and put the little breather there?
this is my valve cover..

I dont understand how this would be bad??
but the breather just connects on the valve cover right where the hose is going to now. Personally, since you have the stock intake i wouldnt see why you'd want to run one, usually people just use them when they buy a cold air or short ram intake, and instead of drilling a hole to run the hose, they'll just put the breather on. I mean you can do it if you want, if you think it looks cool, go for it, but dont expect to gain any noticible power or anything. also, make sure you remember to plug up the hole on the intake where the hose was.

well I have a different setup now, I installed a K&N FIPK intake, and I'm going to replace the stock tube also with a chrome or anodized black one for the K&N FIPK setup, and when I do that I was planning on adding this little valve breather instead of hooking up another tube...
i actually heard it on an infinity g20 (i know its completely different) but i did hear the little thing workin, kinda cool. heh
Thanks for the honest post

please dont install those breathers
they mess up the PCV
whats a PCV??? Positive Crankshaft Ventilation
in other words it helps the ventilation of the air and gases inside the engine whiel its running. it also recycles the fumes.. badraw is dat the oil fumes and other gases goes back into intake , making it all dirty and puttin gum into ur intake manifold and contaminatin the clean air u want the engine to breath
in other words it needs to be hooked to help the engine breath (internally)
as for that filter.. theres a better ghetto solution and a expensive one
1- u can get a oil catch can.. they go for like 110 bucks from greddy and many other companies...
2- Ghetto- u get a fuel filter and some hose and did what i did
this way all the fumes and stuff from inside the engine stays in the filter and all the air u actually suck its clean...

OK well I hate to tell you this but that little filter you have there isnt doing squat except filtering arleady clean air. The air that goes into the valve cover from that point is air that is already going through your air filter so that little fuel filter one isnt doing any good. Also that tube there isnt for the PCV the one on the backside is and that would be where you would hook up a catch can too not the one where you have it hooked to.

sorry vince
but that filter does do something...
i dont actually have a pic anymore from the old hose, but a lot of oil and gumout was in it.... that actually went into the intake tubing
the air that goes tru the filter comes from inside the valve cover to the intake tubing by suction....the intake its sucking air fro inside my engine and recycling it...this way this filter will prevent ant Oil vapors from going inside my intake...
the black box behind the block its already a Honda factory "catch can"
all i am doing its preventing more contaminants from going back into my intake air...

I'll back USDM 4G VTEC on this one. I have the filter in that spot too. While mine isn't dirty, Raene's has quite a bit of oily vapour trapped in the filter. I realize that the best place to install one of these is also in the PCV line as well, but this helps a bit.

exactly.. the air doesn't got to the valve cover, it comes out OUT of the valve cover. thats why them lil breathers that people use are useless. .
now this idea its kinda neat. filtering the air that comes out of the valve cover. vinceg99 posted a link and i was reading it. some people were replying talking about something interesting. they were talking about "T"ing the the hose that comes out of the valve cover to the 1 from the pvc valve and ruining them to a after-market oil catch can then back to the intake manifold. this way would be catching all in the catch can. my .02 cents

You could do that, or do what I plan to do. Keep my ghetto little breather filter and fab up my own low buck catch can for the PCV system. Only thing that has me worried is that people are saying you need to put steel wool or something like that inside the catch can to give the vapor something to stick to. That would kind of worry me, if somehow it broke loose and got into my IM.

Well first off in that link I was the one asking about the "T" that way you could catch all of them from both but please explain this pic to me?? If you look it does say fresh air going into the valve cover. Not recirculated air. Oh and that it is going "INTO" the valve cover not out of....
The inline fuel filter is actually worth it. I once had a breather filter on my SOHC ZC and after about a week or so it got soaked in oil. Oil vapors do go through the valve cover breather hose and in to your intake manifold. Some vapors also travel to the intake manifold through the PCV system as well. Funny how the pic u posted VinceEg shows "fresh air" traveling into the valve cover instead of away. Maybe thats how the engineers hoped it would work but in real life thats just not how it is, at least not on some of our cars.

well i know that pic has the lil arrow there.. but a simple way of proving that the air goes OUT not IN from valve cover. take the lil hose off.. and put ur finger right in front of the hole. you will feel the air coming out. not a vacuum going in.

well this looks like a good idea, from reading everyones post if im going to use a breather i may aswell do what USDM 4G VTEC did and help my car out a bit, i like the idea of filtering out all that crap, and forget the oil catch can, ghetto style all the way!
Thanks!
Thanks!

air is supposed to go in the valvecover, through the crankcase, out the pcv valve (which is a check valve by the way!!! it only flows one way...), and into the intake manifold. if you look at the stock intake system the tubing that goes into the valvecover has a slash cut on the end in the intake. the open end faces up stream, or towards the air filter. it is also located on the inside of the radius because that is were the air velocity is greatest. even thought the engine is sucking air in...if you look at just that stock tube the air is blowing on the open end of the slash cut which forces air into the tube, into the valvecover and so on.
no aftermarket intake that i have ever seen has the slach cut for the tube...its always just a flat welded into the intake. so the pcv system is more than likely no working or really diminished. oil vapers come out of the pcv valve and go into the intake manifold...remember how a pcv valve is a check valve and only flows one way.
more than likely your getting oil vaper through your filter thing because there is no slash cut tube in your intake. i have an airline filter between my pcv valve and intake manifold and it collects a good amount of oil.....i also have a slash cut tube in my intake! so i vote with Vinceg99.

I am aware of that slash cut that u are referring to, but most cars, including mine, that i have seen have a oily and dirty throttle plate (on the front side of the throttle plate, not the back where it always gets dirty)....explain that. After I installed an oil catch can, my TB plate was clean and dry and it remained that way.
