dumass noob question about coolant
ok, ive been working with cars for a bout a year now, and i gotta admit, i really dont know that much. today one of my coolant hoses on my 89 dx hatch got a little pinhole in it and the car started leaking and overheating, not fun in traffic. anyway, how do i fill up the coolant, i think i saw my auto teacher do it by letting the car idle and adding to the radiator every time an air bubble comes up until the coolant goes like an inch within the top of the cap, sound about right?
Here's what you do:
1. Fix the leak (I assume you already did)
2. Fill the coolant up to the top of the radiator (just below the rad cap neck).
3. Start the car, and turn the heater on. when the car is running, squeeze the top rad hose repeatedly and you'll see alot of airbubbles coming out... keep doing this until you get the air out. Also, after you're done that, you can bleed more air out of the system by cracking open the bleeder fitting on top of the theormostat housing (is where I think it is).

I think you misread your manual DX's have thermostats along with all other honda motors.....The reason it takes so long to warm up cause its over cooled from the factory. Oh and the bleeder will be where the upper radiator hose goes to it will be a smaller one looks basically like a brake bleeder.

Here's the real way. Fix leak....drain the rest of the coolant out....Then open the bleeder.....with the car off fill the rad. with the coolant combo until it starts to bubble out of the bleeder.....start car with the heat on full blast.....leave heat on until it gets a litttle warm then kill the heat....keep filling the until the bleeder spits the coolant bubble-free....then tighten bleeder and keep topping off the resivour until the fans come on....put cap on and be done.
