all-motor newbie question

I did some searching and found lots of good ideas on how to build up the bottom end and the head. I'm kinda embarrassed when I ask this question, what components entail the bottom end and the top end (head)? I'm looking for ideas to build up my motor, but it's kinda hard when you don't even know what I'm reading. Thanx for the clarification.
