Timing belt... broke.
Well... the good ol' love that is my EX had a little mishap... the timing belt broke (after only 35k miles on the car).
I have a spare head that I was going to have worked (cam/headwork) but I haven't gone anywhere with it (trying to decide how silly I wanted to go with it), but now my car is REALLY down. The other head is good... just bone stock 135k stuff.
I have my ideas, but any ideas are helpful. I believe I'm not going to rebuild all crazy (10.5:1) and go with the headwork and a mild cam (instead of aggressive as I wanted to go).
But if there is anyone with their $0.02... please chime in.
Thanks!

That's the thing. I have a B18B that I have been SLOWLY gathering parts for to swap in, and was counting on the D16 to get me around for awhile longer.
The previous owner has the parts receipt for the belt when he bought it, and wrote the mileage on the receipt... but the labor receipt is missing. It's ~ 35k.
Of course, shifting at 7800 all day probably didn't help much. Heh.

just toss in a new timing belt, your head should be fine... unless you know you messed up some valves. i broke my belt when i was on it pretty good in my si, and the pistons never touched the valves.hth

Before you automatically think your head is dead, Check first, In my 1990 CRX Si the timing belt went at 70,000 miles and no damage was done. All that needed to be done was to replace the timing belt.

That may be what I'll do. I wasn't driving the car (my girlfriend was) and it was at highway speeds this happened.
Maybe it'll be all right...? I'll find out on Sunday, I guess.

Definately check the head.....but you did say you have another head, throw that thing on and keep up the work on that Bseries you have......also, as with any car you are trying to modify......buy a beater to get you around so that you arent in a bind when things happen, such as now.
broken timing belt = might have bent valves...good thing you have a spare head handy. take the spare head and have it worked on...port and polish...etc., valves, valve train...etc., bigger cam...and get a new program...you'll need it. good luck
if it broke on the hyw I'd be suprised if the valves didn't bend big time or at least not sitting properly.
This is what you can do to cheack really quick
Pull off the valve cover check the height of the retainers when the cam is not pushing down on them
So say you have cyl 1 look at valves 1 & 2 if 2 is sitting lower then 1 and the cam isn't pushing down on it....the valve is bent under and isn't sitting in its seat properly.

Well, I can do that. I'll check that out when I get home.
I've got a spare vehicle... well, three ('93 S-10, '97 CBR 600, '97 900 RR) so getting around isn't that big of a deal. I was going to build the stock motor while getting the B18B together, but now I think I'll just go a bit milder than I was planning with the D16.
*sigh* Don't you just hate it when stuff like this happens?
Thanks for all of the help... H-T is good schtuff.

SHE... SHE LIVES!
New water pump, timing belt and drive belts... adjusted the valves... and she started up.
I'm as happy as I can be.
Thanks, H-T.
