Default Please help! My friends CRX w/ modded jdm b16a is slow!

My good friend is really depressed about his CRX. He just lost to an 03 Si last night from a roll, and to my 2.3 CL from a stop and roll. The Si and I both just have e/cai/h. His 91 Crx has 96 jdm b16a swap, 96 gsr tranny, type R pistons, msd ignition, unlimited rev chip (redlines at 9,500) exedy stage 2 clutch, 9 lb flywheel, and e/i/h. The car feels fast when you drive it, but the gear ratios are just way too long IMO. The engine seems to run perfect, but just isn't as fast as it should be. Also he has 19" Konigs that cold slow him down a bit, but he should still slaughter my car! What should a setup like this be running?? I'm guessing mid 14's, but it can't because my best time is a 15.7 and I beat him by over a car length to 100mph.

If anyone has any advice at all he will be very thankful! Someone has said something about type R pistons wearing out very fast while in a b16, is this true? The type R pistons have been in it for about 30K.

Heres some pics of his car and motor if you want to check it out.

first things first, tell him to dump the 19s get some 15s and then put somebody behind the wheel that knows how to drive

Hes right... If your good friends with him and youve beatin him before... Switch cars and see if you can beat him in his car... That'll tell you if its tha drive or not...

But if he beats you with your car... Than he should take it to a dyno and try ta figure out whats wrong...

Is vtec engaging? When the engine was bought do you know if it was a automatic? It could be that the engine was in a auto car therefore it would have automatic cams? And yes this makes a big difference.

I dont think he needs a fast car if he puts 19's on a crx.

I hope he is not shifting at 9500, because that motor is not going to last very long. That might be the problem right their the motor is probably on its last leg shifting that high. no power past 8000 on a b16a anyway.

OK, couple things:

1) Are those ITR or CTR pistons? ITR pistons would lower the compression of that engine and cost power. CTRs would up the compression.

2) Yeah, the 19s are probably adding 15-20 lbs per tire over good 15s(15 lbs in the rim, another 5 in the tire). 80 lbs on the wheels is like 400 to the car.

3) Those 19s are also tall. So, besides the rotational inertia thats killing him, the taller tires are making those gears feel long. Like reducing the final drive from 4.40 to 4.0 or so.

4) Did he have it tuned? Basically, he's got I/H/E on it, and a light flywheel. Any effects of the light flywheel are cancelled out, and more by those wheels. If he did get CTR pistons in there, he should get some cam gears, too, and get it tuned good.

Do this: Have him swap tires with someone with some light 15s and see what happens.

Plus, do the basics. Get it tuned up. New plugs. Have the injectors cleaned. Make sure the ignition timing is set right(more dyno tuning..). What about the catalytic converter? If you have one, and its running rich(which most generic chips make you do), it'll foul up and plug up(the catalyst overheats and melts together)

If he's worried about the pistons wearing, a simple compression check will show this. If he did run high compression CTRs on crappy gas/poor tuning, he might have messed up a piston and be runnign with only 3.5 cylinders. (I drove for a year on a 6 cyl Jeep with 3.5:1 compression on the #1 cylinder, still drove fine, just a little weak)

Maybe's he's done these things, but its always best to go back to the basics.

Get some 15s and a good tune up and check the compression.

He should be hitting mid 14's with a B16 rex...

wow, lots of great advice guys! Thanks. Right now were gonna go put his steelies on and see if he can at least beat me, then he's gonna check the cat, and do a compression test.

I didn't even know they made auto b16's, these are only for the jdm ones right? That is the ******* worst if you get that kind of luck. The vtec does kick in very hard though, so hopefully he got a 5-speed b16.

They are ITR pistons, not CTR, so could this be a big problem too.

Also about the tranny, the 96 gsr one is brand new because the old one, (ls integ tranny he told me) was grinding every gear! Now this stupid brand new one goes into gear fine, but it seems like you have to hold the clutch in a little longer than normal to have a clean shift. What could this be from.

yeah after all the comments we've pretty much decided that the combo of the 19"s and the tranny are just making his gear ratios too long for his own good.

I'm trying to get him to sell me the 19"s for my CL!
