Default Auto Theft article in new MotorTrend

Theres a auto theft article in new MotorTrend. I just skimmed through it, but basically it looks like the same old crap, but they did mention etching the VIN number on your windows. Anyone heard of that?

Also they mentioned something called "PageTrack2" by motorola and skytel that allows you to control certain things in your car remotly via the internet. Haven't had time to search for info on it. Anyone heard of it.

My windows were etched by the dealer. Hendrix group does all their cars I'm told. Takes a little off the insurance.

I read my local police website, and they said that it makes it harder for a thief to get rid of the parts. Don't know why though.

It takes $4 off my insurance per year. Some dealers and local police stations do it for free. You just have to ask.

Thief replaces windows and VIN is gone of windows and if anybody askes could easliiy say it had a crack in them and had if replaced. The more things help but don;t see much detterent in this.

I don't see how its much of a deterent either. Heres what the heat website says about it:
http://www.heatreward.com/etching.html

"Etching takes that profit away, as it costs between $1,000 and $5,000 to replace all the etched windows. A typical professional thief knows this and will pass up etched vehicles and steal an easier to sell... "

I would imagine this might not apply to ITRs. I'm guesing the number 1 reason they're stolen is to feed hybrid owners with parts.
