I was just wondering what reseting the ecu does and why or when does it need to be done?

You can also remove the upper left 2 fuses from the underhood fuse box, that will also reset your ECU. I believe one is Backup and the other may be F/I, I forget, I know one is a 15a (blue) and the other is 7.5a (brown)

Clock fuse = ECU fuse

Just pull that out and put it back and you are all set.

I'm pretty sure that just checking the ECU codes clears them. They should only reoccur if the problem persists. All powering down the ECU like that will accomplish is resetting your idle.

Just checking them does not clear them. After you find out what code it throws the CEL will still be on. You need to fix the problem reset the ECU and see if the code come up again.
