ok laugh if you will I don't care... most of you will say swap but I only have one car and don't have the kind of money to invest so anyways...

I got a 98 ex head from a friend awhile back with 55,000 miles and I wanna stick it on my hx hotor. I know I have to get an ex ecu, distributor, im, tb, exhaust as well. I've noticed from doing some searching that some of the wires are different on the hx, ie: o2 sensor on the hx has 5 wires where the ex has 4, would it be a whole lot easier to just switch the harness to one from an ex also? I just want everything to be fine and not throw any codes. I know that a tranny for an ex is a whole lot better than what I have and I intend on replacing that when I do a clutch so right now that isn't a priority.

i think its a good idea. there are many mini-me combos out there. and though it is not necessarily the most power giving mod it does help out. and for the relitively low price. alog with everything you mentioned i would get the header for an ex. also i would if at all posible for you get the p28 ecu obd1 (92-95 ex/si) instead of the obd2 p2p from the 96-99 civic ex. they are easier to use, if you do go this rout you wil need a conversion harness (there are many h-t members who make them for cheap). also you may want to invest in an adjustible cam gear, bc i think that the ex head is slightly shorter than the hx. i would however get a fpr and maybe a vafc and get it all dyno tunned. good luck im me with any questions

Thanks for your help... I don't really consider this a mini-me setup cause my engine already is vtec. The only reason I want to do this swap is that I have that other head just lying around it's waiting to be bolted on. I know someone has done this swap. I guess not that many people don't know that much about an hx. Sometimes I wished I would've got that ex that was there when I bought the hx, I didn't know much about hondas then and I saw it also had a vtec and of course it was cheaper. Sometimes I wonder if my car feels like it's the reheaded step child, nobody loves it but me.

if i were in your shoes i'd swap out to the p2p ecu like the dude said and use the y8 timing belt. If it doesn't fit and you don't feel like swapping belts etc see if the water pump is different on the y8 nd if it is pick up one of those, that may alleviate your problems. But i would certainly think that the y8 belt would be a proper fit, but even the y5 belt might work. good luck, http://crx.honda-perf.org/arti....html . That guy got 99 ft/lbs of tq to the wheels at 2200 rpms, maybe you can do better

I think my timing belt is the same as the ex... the car has 130,000 miles now, I had the tune up done at 105,000 miles (timing belt, water pump, etc...) and get this... after I had that done about 3 months later honda comes out with some emmisions recall and extended my emmisions to 150,000 miles cause it's lev. They tune it up for free as well do some some other stuff, I was later my check engine light came on and they're computer was down so they reset it, 2 weeks later it came on again and they kept telling me it was the tune up cause they didn't show that my car had it done, so I let them tune it up cause it had been about 20,000 miles since I done it myself, and all it was that the egr ports needed cleaning (more ) tired of taking my car there for dumb ****, it was free so I didn't care. Anyways with that said I'll get a d16y8 head gasket, I found on here it's a little thinner and bumps the compression up. My engine could use that, the hx has just a little bit less compression compared to the d16y8. I'll also get a aem cam gear to match my power pulleys But mainly I'm just concerend about the wiring for the o2 sensor as well as any other wiring I'm going to come across.

easiest thing to do would be to just take your current o2 and put it in the exhaust mani, if it throws a code i'd be worried, but the hx is made for hella fuel economy so the o2 is wideband i believe. Is it the harness itself leadingupto the o2 5 wire or just the o2 sensor w/ 5 wires? If the o2 throws a code see about switching them.

Thats one of the differences between a d16y5 and d16y8, my o2 sensor does have 5 wires and the ex has 4. So I'd have to replace the o2 sensor with a 4 wire one. Is 4 of wires the same for that and I just clip it and hook up a 4 wire plug to the correct wires or will I have to run some wires to the ecu, or can I just get a harness for the d16y8 cause it's already setup that way. I'd like to keep the car obd2. I just wanna add a little more power (that my car currently lacks) for a few hundered dollars. Hell I'll probabally keep this car till it dies so whenever it gets wore out I'll just do a complete swap. Right now I'm faster than dx's and lx's, but I get spanked by ex's though... I'd like to do just enough to beat a factory ex, I know thats not saying much but I'm tired of getting spanked.
