put new rings, pistons, and rod bearings in a gsr with a slight hone on the cylinders. used assembly lube. plastigauged the bearings. the clearance was .002. is that clearance too little? someone told me that .002-.003" is ok. the motor was turning ok by hand, but it is not that easy to turn and this is with the spark plugs out. is the clearance my problem and is that why the motor is not starting??? because it should be able to spin? thanks.
First... you're building a motor using info that someone TOLD you ???
BTW, .002" is the Service Limit on a B series motor for rod bearing oil clearances. (but I didn't tell you that...heh heh heh)
Second... (Have to ask): Have you used the plastigauge process before ? Do you know how to do it properly ? (not to hard anyways). Did you check for tapering in the rod and main journals before you did the final assembly ?
**Assembly should crank relatively smoothly by hand.
Third: When doing a fresh rebuild, you need to prime the fuel and oil pumps considerably (All of your passages and lines will be EMPTY.) before starting and did you ensure that the cam timing (t/belt) is dead on ? (1 notch off and it won't start... or will start and die right after.

found the problem. there was no compression building. everything was ready to go and my friend who's gsr this is, tightened the distributor on with the slot on the cam the wrong way...ouch!!! i wasn't aware of this and saw the distributor wiggling!!! so i cam timing was off, the cam was surely binding almost locked up. since we tried starting the car, unaware, the valves probably got bent. gotta pull the head soon.
