Default last min check before starting up engine for the first time ... break in

just changed the pistons/rings in my motor and about to take it out for a first ride tonight

gsr w/ ctr pistons
stock air filter/air box
honda oil filter
10-40w oil
coolant
fuel 58psi
timing 10-12 (not sure yet)

any suggestions?

as for breaking in..i plan on taking 1st/2nd/3rd up to 3k rpm with 1/2 throttle for about 5 times and on 3rd let rpm drop from 3k to 2k

then the same method but with 3/4 throttle to full for about 5 more times

this should put about 5-10 miles on the motor.

should i go up to 4th gear?
should i redline in 3rd? and let the rpm drop?

after change oil/check coolant/temp/idle

any help/suggestions would be great...thanks!!!

My first concern is your compression ratio. What gas are you using in there? I had an LS/VTEC w/ PCT (B16B) pistons and a P72 (GS-R) head, the CR was calculated to just under 13:1, P72 block will make it slightly less, but I had to run 101 octane in it all the time.

When you first put load on it, listen for ping (sounds like a can of bolts being shook up). I ended up having to drain all the gas out of my car before driving it away, and replacing it with 101.

Next, why are you using 10w-40 oil? 5w-30 is recommended.

What injectors are you using with that 58psi fuel pressure? If you're using stock 240cc's, you're going to cook them under that pressure. Max recommended pressure is around 51 psi.

Set your ignition timing to stock initially.

Break in should be
<3000rpm for 250 miles
<4000rpm for 350 miles
<5000rpm for 600 miles
<8000rpm for 1000miles

I think the reasoning for that method is stronger- TOO's reasoning is that "the metals have to get to know each other." The empirical evidence from motoman is a bit more convincing, not to mention the fact that the factories run the bejeesus out of the engines at the end of the assembly line.

hmm... I think I may have to run my engine hard...Motoman's arguments are very convincing. Thanks for the links.

there are other post on HT about taking up to redline in 3rd and 4th then let the rpm drop (heat cycle? forgot what its called) ...very tempting haha

i didn't get to start up my car last night due to blown main relay (damn old cars) hopefully i'll get a chance after work tonight...*fingers crossed* let the beating begin!!!

I've definately got the Helms. Did you run into any particular problems. You know, something I might want to watch out for?

just take your time...if your not sure about something.......DONT DO IT...until you know more about it...its good to have someone watching over your back just to make sure you dont mess up...
