Default :: looking for free mods to improve turbo spool up to full boost ::

setup is a stock bore gsr with 10:1 je pistons and t3/60-1. so i was wondering if there are any free/cheap mods that i can do to decrease spool time. i searched the archive and found a boost controller and 3" dp and exhaust. is there anything else i can do? thanks.

Where is it spooling now? Say in third or fourth gear? Full 3" exhaust is the best thing I can think of. Nitrous would help. Reducing intake pipes as much as possible and running the smalles possible. What ar is your turbine?

You can retard the timing and bump up the fuel. The extra hot charge will improve spool.

Also reduce exhaust back pressure as much as possible. High flow cat helps.

Make sure you have no exhaust leaks before the turbo.

Adding fuel wil cause the EGT's do decrease, which is the opposite of what you want. However, within the realm of usable A/F ratios, changing the fuel flow has such a small effect on EGT that I wouldn't even bother.

Retarding the timing will make more of a difference, but it will also decrease power.

Basicially, you want to make your exhaust and intake as free-flowing as possible, and you want to make sure you are using a bost control setup that des not let the WG see a signal until you are in boost (ball-and-spring MBC, most EBC's.)

a properly designed manifold would help quite a bit also. If you have the money, full-race gets my vote.

You only barely kind of right, sir. Retarding the timing AND adding fuel will cause much more to keep burning while it is exiting the combustion chamber, making for even higher egt's.

In addition, running more lean or more rich from stoichiometric (14.7:1) will increase egt's, so it's an illusion that running more lean ONLY will cause EGT's to rise. In reality going either way will raise them.

If you make/buy a manual boost controller make sure it has a small bleed port (like a hair's width in diameter), otherwise it will maintain boost in that portion of the line when you shift, making the turbo take longer to spool in between shifts.

Setup your exhuast like that cheesey froggie guy. Hit a switch, and you got instant open down pipe.

If you're talking about lag when you're launching, a 2-step will fix that quickly.

Full Race mani and a GT series turbo. Oh wait you said free or cheap. Sorry man not a DSM or really a factory turbo'd car for that matter, it's gonna take a little time and $. Basically what everyone said is correct. Get your intake and exhaust set-up as free flowing as possible. I wouldn't do the retard timing thing IMHO.
